Rising Stars: Meet Shannon King of Rockville, MD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon King.

Shannon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi, everyone! I am Shannon King. I am an upcoming writer and creative from Rockville, Maryland. My passion for writing began in 2017 and shortly after, The Makings of She was created in 2018.

For me, writing became an outlet that allowed me to shift the narrative of how I spoke on my experiences as a woman, mother to a child with special needs, and an advocate for the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It became my story to tell. There are many individuals like me who don’t have an outlet, an option for therapy, or a way to release. I decided to become that person.

Writing has allowed me to be a vessel for others who are also on the journey of healing, self-discovery, and reflection. I’ve gained so many connections and community through my words. That’s my superpower and I intend to use it to reflect the connections I want to gain through my words.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Writing and working to establish myself as a writer has not always been a smooth transition. The road to discovery and making a name for myself has its ebbs and flows. Every now and then I go through stages of not having the inspiration to be creative, occasionally the words don’t align with what I envisioned to release, the anxiety of not connecting with my community, and whether the work I create is virtuous enough to get the traction it merits. Though, I’ve decided that those notions would not be the determination factor for surrendering the creative ability I was blessed with.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My professional career being an Accountant/Consultant of 10 years coincides with my passion and creativity for establishing myself as a writer. It allows me to narrate in disguise. It allows me to take disordered and complex information, discover the actuality within it, explain the complexity of it and supports the decision of individuals grounded in the material provided. The imbrication of the skillsets generates a niche that individualizes me from other writers. It classifies me as a strategic communicator, advisor, not just a preparer, and translator between numbers and people.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned on this journey of writing is to be the narrator of your story. The work you create is solely yours and it does not imitate other creatives. Your uniqueness is what makes you, YOU. Do not place yourself in a box, because the visibility of your work is boundless. Do not allow the anxiety of deficiency and not being perceived to steer you away from your passion. It all works out in the end.
