Today we’d like to introduce you to Omar Harris.
Hi Omar, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started when I was young. When the jeans jackets was out you know with the graffiti and the cartoon characters on it. Information customers wasn’t as accessible for a kid to start a business back then as it is now. I always control people around me. Was always pushing me to do something with it. That was one of the first things I did.
It was back in the 80s we got an influx of people from everywhere New Yorkers, a lot of Puerto Ricans. Everybody was hustling and bustling back then so I guess that’s where I got the entrepreneurial spirit from. Back then it was more about community like we had a block party at least once a month.
Growing up around that time seeing how the local business owners kept community going is why I wanted to grow up and own a business. I made from helping the family out with food for the rest of the week until they get paid, or somebody lights out and they need candles and ice, but don’t got no money. I wanted to be like the shop owner before I was even old enough to think about having job. But I got off topic.
I took the harder route as far as getting a loan and getting a business started . I bought everything out-of-pocket all equipment inventory .But now I got my own website. So it was tough in that aspect, but I would tell anybody that trying to start , to collect your contacts and networking relationships as you start on your journey to perfecting your craft. Because if you’re around good motivated people, they keep you on your a game. Because I did a couple Collabos it went from wanting to start a clothing company ,to wanting to play my part in a youth facilitation center ( shot out Uncle T, Byrds eye view media, and The Literal Woman ) summer camp youth workshop coming back soon.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all, just learning a different things about business. Working a job just to pay for the business to get started.. not knowing the difference between dealing with a big corporate bank and a small bank. And when you buy expensive equipment, make sure to check and clean it before putting it away no matter how tired you are. That’s a big money saver right there.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a designer and facilitator. Specialize in taking peoples thoughts and ideas and bringing them to life. I’m known for being the family member or coworker that always know how to do different things. I’m proud that my people know my word means something. I’m very solution based , I’m teachable and knowledgeable so I guess what sets me apart is the old school work ethic of learn the person job above you and below
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
