Rising Stars: Meet Michael Mackey of Maryland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Mackey.

Hi Michael, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Michael Mackey. I’m 45 on the 30th of this month. I have a 16-year-old son who is near perfect I am soon to be engaged to a wonderful Caribbean girl that has three beautiful daughters. We’ve got a great family. I used to work for most of the more popular painting companies in Anne Arundel County and I just wasn’t getting what I needed financially so I started my own thing a couple years ago. It was the The best decision .I ever made a specialize in custom house painting, interior or exterior. I do Pressure Washing I stain decks usually if it has anything to do with Painting and a house I can do it. I do like to tell my customers I do flawless work with a strive for perfection in each job which should reflect in my photos. Most of my work is in the Cape Saint Claire area in Annapolis or over in Pasadena, but I have a few good customers over on the eastern shore and I’ve been known to travel if need be.. as you can see from my reviews. If you do great work, you will get a great response. I’m very grateful to my customers and looking forward to the future of growing this business.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been pretty smooth last year. I tried to expand paying an advertising firm basically a second mortgage to get more leads but unfortunately, if you don’t have the employees that do the kind of work that I do you’re not gonna get very far because you’re either gonna risk a bad review or a problem on a job and that’s exactly what happened so I decided to take a step back and I basically do all my own work sometimes I’ll bring a few people on. I got a big job coming up at my churches sanctuary in a couple months. I’ll probably bring a couple guys but for the most part. It’s just me which is why I get booked out so far. I think the reason it’s smooth and easiest because like I said, if you do good work and take your time and you don’t try to cut corners, you will get a five star review and you will get more work from that customer.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
There’s a right Way and there is the wrong way to paint and you can’t cut corners. I would say 75% of the job is prep work. You can’t paint over walls with holes and bumps on the wall. You have to protect peoples furniture and their floors and unfortunately, there’s not a lot of other paint that do that companies, they might do some of it, but they don’t do all of it a lot of big Painting companies even ones that do very well. They’ve got 20 guys on their crew and only five of them really know how to paint if that so you got 15 let’s say helpers that are painting like an experienced Painter in a house next to the experienced Painter so you got some good work and some bad work when I’m done it is all perfect again. I take my time a steady hand definitely helps you. Gotta clean up after yourself. Definitely can’t leave a mess in someone’s house. You have to give these people an experience not just throwing colors on the wall. Let them know what they’re paying for.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
As a kid, I used to like walking through the woods and flipping over logs and finding out what creatures were and I would have my North American animal guide when I would go down to the creek or the dock and figure out what kind of ducks they were what kind of turtles what kind of snakes bugs, etc. that made me happy I think anytime I’m out I’m mother nature I’m the happiest
