Rising Stars: Meet Javier Ruisanchez of DC & Surrounding Areas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Javier Ruisanchez.

Hi Javier, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My love for flowers began long before Velora. Growing up in Puerto Rico, I was surrounded by their color, beauty, and warmth. They became part of the way I understood love, celebration, and home. I remember being a little kid and bringing flowers to my sister after her dance recitals. Even then, flowers felt like a way of saying, “I’m proud of you. I’m celebrating you. This moment matters.”

Much of my life has also been dedicated to artistic swimming. As one of the first men in the sport, I’ve had the privilege of becoming a four-time World Champion and nine-time World Cup medalist. Those accomplishments hold years of hard work, meaningful friendships, and experiences I’m deeply grateful for. The sport taught me resilience, attention to detail, and how to bring emotion into something I create.

As an athlete, I always looked forward to receiving flowers on the medal podium. At the end of a competition, I would collect them and put them in my room. They made those moments feel even more special, and I felt so loved. Looking back, flowers have been part of both how I celebrated others and how I felt celebrated myself.

Years later, my childhood best friend asked me to create the flowers for her engagement party. I said yes without realizing that one moment would change the direction of my life. Choosing the flowers, creating the arrangements, and seeing her happiness reminded me how beautiful life can be. What began as a favor quickly became something deeper – a creative calling I could not ignore.

I created Velora with one heartfelt belief: flowers should make people feel something.

Velora began with my love for the little details – the flowers, the textures, the wrapping, and the feeling someone has when they receive something made especially for them. I wanted to create a brand that felt personal, intentional, and beautiful in a way that never feels forced.

Today, I’m building Velora and serving the DMV area. Every arrangement is created with intention, from the flowers and color palette to the ribbon, vessel, and smallest finishing detail. Each choice helps tell a story and makes the gesture feel personal.

I’m still learning and growing, and I’m grateful for every person who has welcomed Velora into their life. My greatest hope is that every arrangement carries love within it, and that the person receiving it feels celebrated, remembered, and truly seen – the way flowers have made me feel throughout my own life.

To me, Velora is the emotion behind the gesture, the memory connected to the moment, and the care that goes into every detail. Flowers may not last forever, but the feeling they leave behind can.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There has been so much excitement in building Velora, but yes, I’ve had moments of doubt. When you’re creating something so personal, you put a lot of yourself into it. I care deeply about every arrangement, and I’m learning how to trust my creativity while also figuring out the business side of things.

What has made this journey so special is that I haven’t had to do it alone. My family has become my Velora team, and I have friends who go the extra mile to help me succeed. Having people who believe in me, encourage me, and show up for me has meant more than I can express.

I’m learning that excitement and uncertainty can exist together. I don’t have to have everything figured out to keep moving forward. Each order gives me another opportunity to learn, create, and feel a little more confident.

More than anything, I feel grateful. Velora may have started with my vision, but there is so much love and support behind it. Getting to build something I care about with people who care about me has been one of the most beautiful parts of the journey.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m the founder and creative director of Velora, a floral design business serving the DMV area. I create arrangements for gifting, celebrations, weddings, and everyday spaces, with a style that is clean, natural, and thoughtful. I love working with color, texture, and shape while allowing each flower’s beauty to come through.

My approach begins with the person and the feeling behind the flowers. Who are they for? What are we celebrating? What would make this feel special to them? From the flowers and color palette to the vessel, ribbon, and wrapping, I want every detail to feel considered and personal.

That’s what I hope sets Velora apart: the care that goes into the whole experience. My philosophy is simple-flowers should make people feel something. They should make someone feel loved, celebrated, comforted, remembered, or simply seen. I want the arrangement to reflect the thoughtfulness of the person giving it.

My background in artistic swimming influences how I work, too. Years of creating and performing routines taught me to consider how individual details come together, and how something beautiful can carry emotion. I bring that same attention and heart to floral design.

What I’m most proud of is seeing something I created become part of someone else’s meaningful moment. That feeling takes me back to making the flowers for my best friend’s engagement party and seeing her happiness. It’s still the part that matters most to me.

I’m also proud to be building a business with so much support from my family and friends. Velora is still growing, and I’m grateful for every person who trusts me with their flowers. My hope is that as it grows, it always keeps that personal feeling-the sense that someone took the time to create something especially for you.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice would be to give yourself permission to begin, even if you don’t have everything figured out. I’m still early in my own journey with Velora, but I’m learning that you can care deeply about what you’re creating and still have moments of doubt. You don’t have to feel completely confident to take the next step.

Start with something that means something to you. For me, it was creating flowers for my best friend’s engagement party. I didn’t know that saying yes to that one experience would lead to building a business. Sometimes you discover what you love by giving yourself the chance to try it.

I would also say: let people support you. My family has become my Velora team, and my friends have gone the extra mile to help me succeed. There is something really beautiful about allowing the people who love you to be part of what you’re building.

What I wish I understood at the beginning is that being new doesn’t mean you have nothing to offer. You bring your own experiences, perspective, and care to your work. There will always be more to learn, but you can learn while you create. Be open to feedback, appreciate the small steps, and give yourself room to grow.
