Rising Stars: Meet Davon Moseley of Maryland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Davon Moseley.

Hi Davon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story begins in a small town located in North Carolina, called Scotland Neck. The town is so small that there isn’t even a traffic light. However, despite the size of the town the people shared an abundance of love and care for one another. The origins of both sides of my family start here and are the reason why I have a passion for culinary. My family placed an emphasis on spending time with one another and food was always present. While I enjoyed eating all of the food, I had a certain curiosity for watching the process of food being made. This curiosity led me to paying close attention to my aunts and grandmother while they were in the kitchen. I also watched a litany of cooking shows such as Iron Chef America, Turn Up the Heat with G. Garvin, and Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations. From this I would experiment in the kitchen on my own making dishes for fun as cooking was an outlet for me to be creative throughout my life.

Fast forward to 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic, I was enrolled in a Master’s program and had a lot of free time on my hands between classes. I would cook and post what I made for the day on my personal social media account. People would contact me and ask me where I got certain dishes from and would be surprised that I made it myself. I didn’t see much of it but just took it as a compliment as I was just cooking for fun. I had a select few friends that encouraged me to make a cooking page however. I was reluctant at first but decided to move forward with it. There’s a lot that has happened between the start and where we are today but I can credit stepping out on faith, support from my community, and a lot of good food got us to where we are today.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a journey for sure but I’m thankful for everything that I have encountered. I had to learn about business and entrepreneurship on the fly. Constantly working to better my skills in the kitchen. Adjusting my personal life to make sure that I’m making decisions that don’t have a negative affect on my business and those that support me. You name it and I probably have encountered an obstacle that many have in life but each challenge further developed my character.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I wear many hats in my business. Some include recipe developer, media producer, and being a published author. I specialize in recipe developing and teaching others how to develop skills in the kitchen. I’m most proud of being able to wake up everyday with a passion to serve those that I am called to serve. To answer the question about ‘what sets you apart from others’, I look to just be myself and do what I love to do. I never want to look at it from the perspective of creating difference in myself in comparison with other people but to just be the best version of myself that I can be.

What are your plans for the future?
For the future, I just want to keep pushing my ability to create good art and connect with the world. I have a new outdoor cooking series called Borders that is set to launch soon.
