Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Michael.
Hi Chris, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Chrisen Michael known as The God son of RnB was born and raised in The Bronx New York. He started his career at an early age dancing in local talent shows. Wanting out of his tumultuous surroundings in life he went on to secure a part as the lead actor in ABC’s
after school special “Getting Ahead”, standing along side actor/director Tony Danza (Who’s the Boss / Taxi). He then appeared in The Coca-Cola “Around The World”
commercial directed by John Singleton. At the age of 13 his career in dance began, doing MTV’s “The Grind”, which lead to shows, Say What Karaoke, Global Grooves, BET’s 106 & Park with other shows and commercials that followed.
Christen has worked with various well-known artists on tour and in videos.
Lil’ Mo – Dem Boyz, Busta Rhymes – Get Out, Biggie Smalls – Get Money, Lil’ Kim – Playas Anthum, Monica – Ain’t Nobody, Queen Latifah – Black Hand Side, Charlie Baltimore – Feel it, Strings – Raise It Up, Swiss Beats, Treach of Naughty By Nature and Bossman. Since 2003 he has been head choreographer and dancer for Universal Records, R&B Recording Artist Lil’ Mo. He is also featured in the Walt Disney film “Step Up 2“ and also featured on Fox 45 news for the Waynes Bro. Film Dance Flick. Chris has been choerographer, artistic director, mentor and Judge for The Step It Up competition in NYC with Nike and DYCD from 2009 to 2017 bringing the inner city youth together through many social awareness campaigns
In 2007 Chris was auditioning girls for a tour and while teaching someone said “I didnt know you could sing too”. He heard that before but this time it prompted him to start training. Going to karoke almost everyday and harmonizing with anything that came on the radio. Before long Chris Michael was born. Growing up he listened to singer/songwriters Carl Thomas, Ginuwine, Kelly Price, Tank, New Edition, Donell Jones, 112, and Faith Evans. This is where his foundation of vocal excellence comes from. Those were his teachers. He was able to use what he learned from them and cultivate his own unique sound. His vocal texture and style mixed with rnb, hip-hop and reggae is the perfect collaboration for your ears. Since then He has opened for artists: 112, Omarion, Amerie, Freeway, Lil’ Mo, Ray J, Trey Songz, Big Sean and has performed at the Baltimore AFRAM Fest 2016 (dmv) Taste Of Soul Fest 2021 (atl) BB Kings (nyc) SOBs (nyc) Drom (nyc) House Of Blues (tx) Backstage (atl) Apollo Theater (nyc) as well as the opening act on the Men Of Soul Tour in 2015. Then In 2016 he was hired to choreograph, dance and sing live background vocals for renound Gospel Artist “J. Moss” on Bet, Centric and TVOne for the Allstate Insurance Gospel Superfest.
He has writen songs for himself and other indie artists but 2015 Chris was asked write for Julia Robertson of 90s RnB group Ex-Girlfriend. He currently is a writer for 1924 music group where he has also been co writer for artists like Qui Qui Martin of the RnB group Isis and X Factors Marcus Canty. It doesn’t stop there for Chris either because he is also the head video/film director at 1924 music group. And in his spare time teaches dance classes at Dance Baltimore, DJ’s at The Windsor Inn, EE Catering service, and Slick Talk Radio on Ablazinradio.com every Wednesday 7-9pm and around the DMV area.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Growing up in the Bronx New York had its ups and downs, but it was always great when I found things to do that made sense with the talent I had. I didn’t have a father so the things that having and unsupportive abusive father, I still have to figure it out on my own from watching TV, from music or other people. New York was known for the school of performing arts because it was where they filmed the Legendary TV show fame starring Debbie Allen. I remember being excited to addition to go to that school but when I walked through the halls, everyone was just different and I felt so out of place and then when it was time for me to audition they asked for Clothing that I did not own and probably couldn’t afford at the time and I know asking for something like that would start a war that I wouldn’t win.when I moved from New York to Baltimore that was the hardest because I was an outsider coming in and sometimes even after being here so long it still feels that way the transition from CHOREOGRAPHER to Singer was even worse. People didn’t take me seriously because they were so used to me dancing so I stopped teaching dance classes and focused on being Chris Michael the singer.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I started teaching dance classes in my spare time summer 2026. I had stopped teaching for a long while because I started losing the passion for it. Some of the students/backstage moms in some of the studios can get a little out of hand, as well as helping a lot of people with their projects and sometimes not even getting a thank you. So I said, let me stop letting everybody use me and let me use myself. So I stopped teaching and started focusing on singing because I had started getting more passionate about that but as of now I’m teaching hip-hop and Street jazz classes I’m known for my authentic New York style of dance and the eye to see what makes things come to life while choreographing. I’m just proud that I can get up and be creative with all the talents. God has given me. I’m proud that I still have the want to help others in this business. I guess what set me apart is my willingness to never give up and being able to push others or at least show them their potential and what all they can possibly do an achievement life.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up in New York City in the Bronx, the birthplace of hip-hop seeing all the grit the good the bad the bright lights definitely help build who I am as a person and an artist. I live breathe and was in love with Musiq and Dance. My cousin and I used to go down to 34th St. and get fake IDs and we would be hitting up all the clothes our older cousin at the age of 14 I was tall and looked a little bit older from my age and my cousin definitely was over 21 so I got to experience all that the underground New York scene had to offer.
