Meet Tyrell Hughes of Temple Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyrell Hughes.

Hi Tyrell, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my first business at the age of 21 in Albany, NY. I started a not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 charitable organization aimed at mentoring young males, and I ran this organization for nine years. I am a social entrepreneur at heart, and I am always looking for ways to work on projects that speak to my core. I’ am passionate about helping people.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
After running Men Organized to Develop, Empower and Lead (MODEL, Inc) I learned a great deal about what it takes to successfully run a business. It was something I didn’t have at the time. At 21, there was just a lot more about business, and budgeting I still had to figure out. In addition to the business side, I had to just balance life and in hindsight I realize I needed a lot more financial stability to run a not for profit then I had at the time. Ultimately, the decision was made to close it down and I moved to Maryland. In 2020, I picked up the passion again and started my second business The BACK Community, LLC. This time I decided not to go the charitable route, but I wanted to build a business that truly allowed me the freedom to create and sustain myself financially without the limitations of a charitable organization or the constant need to pitch for grants and funding. The road wasnt smooth but it all makes sense now. I learned so much about life as a result of my earlier struggles. The biggest being that when you are working with other people you cannot want their success more than they do.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an author, financial coach and mentor. I have written Just A Kid From Arbor Hill: A Story of Beating the Odds and that books is being turned into sixteen illustrated kids books. The first being published in September of 2025 and that is The BIG Chop. I have been teaching financial literacy since 2020 after receiving certification from Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. Dating back to MODEL, Inc I have been mentoring young adults for over 20 years. In addition to my entrepreneurial endeavors, I work for the federal government as a Financial Analyst but that is not what I am most known for it. Recently I pivoted to a new role as a Change Management Specialist which mirrors a lot of the transformational work I do through The BACK Community, LLC educating others on the benefits of positive change. Lastly, my wife and I opened Capitol Area Cleaners, LLC in 2025 and we do residential cleanings throughout the DC Metro Area.

I am most proud of my work in the community with young adults. Helping young folks find their way as they navigate schools and life is something I pride myself on greatly. Often times, I talk about how God allowed me to experience what I did to be a more effective teacher with others later. I know how hard it is to create success and overcome obstacles which is why I wrote a book about it. I am from a neighborhood in Albany, NY called Arbor Hill and many of my challenges came early in my life living in this community.

What sets me apart is my authenticity. It isnt always easy to own your short comings to the world. I have learned that embracing my experiences not only adds to my authenticity and credibility, but it has become my superpower. Nobody can show up as me besides me, so rather than showing up as someone else, in every room I walk into I bring my own unique story.

Any big plans?
I am working on positioning myself to retire as early as possible. So, working on being a good steward over my finances and investments is very important to me at this stage of life. I want to myself employment income to completely replace my 9-5 income. So, I am working on that. My plans are to continue to create the remaining 14 books as part of this 16-book series. I see a lot of freedom in owning your works and I am ensuring that throughout this process I maintain ownership over all my works. So, after working for someone else for the past 20 years I am excited for the day to completely go off on my own.
