Today we’d like to introduce you to Trelyn Moore.
Hi Trelyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began experimenting with photography in 2016, while simultaneously developing a clothing brand. My original thought was to lower costs by taking photos of the models that wore the clothes I made. What I didn’t realize was that this would be the discovery of a talent that I didn’t know I had. Through many months of trial and error, I was able to teach myself the fundamentals of photography, as well as develop my personal style found in my photos today. What started out as a fun hobby taking portraits with friends and occasionally trying to promote my clothing brand, led to the beginning of my photography career. Fast forward about 10 years to today, and I’ve done countless photoshoots. I’ve worked with models, music artists, drink companies, and art galleries. I’ve had my photography shown on a billboard multiple times, as well as designed and published more than 10 photo-books for myself and others. My end goal is to shoot fashion editorials for well known fashion brands and magazines. I also want to be able to support my lifestyle with my photography and other art that I create. My name is Trelyn Moore, I am a 25 year old Photographer that specializes in portrait photography.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My photography career has DEFINITELY not been a smooth journey. In the beginning, it was very hard to get clients and at times it can still be difficult to get consistent clients. I also had difficulty pricing myself as my skills grew as a photographer. I knew that my work was great, however trying to convince my target market that I’m the photographer for them proved to be a challenge. I graduated in the summer of 2019, and shortly after I went to college. When covid hit, I dropped out of school to pursue my photography career full time, and this change was definitely one of my hardest challenges I’ve ever faced. I was forced to relocate where I lived, I couldn’t pursue my business, and there was a lot of strain put on family relationships. In February of 2021, my car was broken into and the thief stole about $1200 worth of my photography gear. Despite all of these obstacles, I never stopped chasing my dream of being an established photographer. I feel that I can’t give up until my goal is realized because I believe that I’ve been through far too much to just give up. I know that I have the talent and determination to make my dreams my reality, all I need is an opportunity to showcase it to the world.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As stated before, I am a photographer that specializes in portrait photography. Most of my work consists of very nostalgic feeling, and artistic portraits that balance a realistic look with a larger than life feel. A lot of my early work consisted of different mediums of film photography. I’ve shot countless rolls of 35mm, 6×6, and 6×7 film. While trying to find my identity in my photography, I fell in love with the feeling that film brought to my portraits. In my opinion, there is nothing that tops a great film portrait. At one point in my photography career, I shot nothing but film for about a year. While spending so much time with this medium, I taught myself how to recognize how different film stocks rendered colors in most outdoor lighting situations when shooting portraiture. So much so, that I could emulate film colors on a digital photo. After the spike in prices for film, I couldn’t afford to keep shooting it for every gig that I would get booked for, which caused me to switch to digital. However, I decided to buy a camera that would help me achieve the look and feel of film, even though the photo was digital. The character of film; and that nostalgic feeling that you get when looking at a film photo, is what I feel I am most known for. I’ve spent years perfecting my photographic style, as well as taking my time to frame every shot to perfection, and I feel like that is what I’m the most proud of. Being able to get a perfect shot on film without the ability to check right away if it turned out also makes me very proud as a portrait photographer. I believe my dedication to the art of film photography is the main aspect that sets me apart from others. I also feel that I have an eye for a great composition and that too sets me apart from my competition.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite memory as a child has to be spending time with my family on road trips and outings. It’s funny because even as I imagine being in those moments as a child, I can literally see the memories as a film photo. Imagine reliving your favorite memory as a child, but seeing it as like a video from a super 8 camera. That’s the best way to describe how I remember moments from my childhood. Hopefully, that helps shine some light as to why I fell in love with the film medium.

- Deposits are 50% of the shoot rate.
