Meet Tim Shotzberger of Home Land Enviornmental

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Shotzberger.

Hi Tim, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Home Land Environmental started in 2004 as a septic inspection company for real estate transfers. The company has since grown into a water well, radon, mold and sewer inspection company. Home land Environmental opened Home Land Labs in 2016 who processes water, wastewater and mold samples for Home Land Environmental and residents and companies throughout Maryland. The water lab analysis and environmental inspection accumulate over $5 million in annual revenues at the hands of the 45 employees. Home Land Labs has branches in Bel Air, Annapolis to facilitate customer drop offs of their samples which are then transported to Towson’s 6,000 square foot lab, where a bulk of the lab analysis occurs. Home Land labs is one of Maryland’s Environmental Labs, while Home Land Environmental stands as one of the top Environmental Inspection companies for real estate transactions in the nation.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If anybody tells you growing a business to 45 employees and $5 million in revenue is a smooth road, they are lying. Growing a business is one of the most challenging ventures that I can imagine. Even if you are great at hiring, training, delegating, coaching, and growing employees, you still have the rocky nature of the residential real estate industry. Not only is this business highly seasonal, their over all industry tracking looks like a roller coaster from the companies inception in 2004 and through now and the interest rate hikes and loss of homebuyer leverage where they were unable to do inspections, if they wanted to offer a serious homebuying contract to the seller. Seeing, predicating and managing the road bump, pot holes, road closures and dead ends is the job of managing entrepreneurs.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Home Land Enviornmental?
Home Land Environmental is known as Maryland’s premiere, residential environmental inspection company. Our bread and butter services are water sampling, well yield testing, and septic system inspections. Our knowledge, experience and expertise set apart from the competition. Most of our competition is a company who wants to find repair work. They offer cheaper inspections in hopes to find repair and installation work to feed their company. Whereas Home Land Environmental is a neutral, third-party company. If our inspection results in a need for repair, we will not do the work. Our findings will not be influenced by the the opportunity to profit with further, more expensive work. For that reason we are trusted more than any other company. our lab offers a vertical integration that allows our customer’s water samples and mold samples to be processed faster and more efficiently. This control offers our customers greater efficiency, satisfaction speed.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I grew up in Lancaster County Pennsylvania. My father and uncle owed a John Deere Dealership in a rural part of Northern Lancaster County. As soon as I could carry a trash can and dust clothe, I was working. I wanted to help, to be a part of what my family was working towards. I admired the responsibility of my family owning a business. I wanted to grow up fast, so I could be a better help and work like the grownups worked. I loved sports, riding my bike and collecting baseball cards.

In 1983, my family’s business dissolved, we moved into town, and learned how to get by with less. I began my life lesson on the risk of business ownership.
