Today we’d like to introduce you to Tangi Singleton.
Hi Tangi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well first I want to introduce myself. My name is Tangi Singleton-Jones. I am a proud woman with Lupus who wears many hats especially those of service. I have several ventures, where all of them are being of service to other people. I started Destined for Greatness Mentoring and Outreach Program mainly because I noticed a lot of things that were around when I was a child were becoming obsolete as my children were growing up so I wanted to be able to award them with the experiences and memories that I had and was able to create throughout my childhood. Also my house has always been the Big Momma Safe House in the neighborhood where any child can come for love safety and even a meal. My arms are open to both young and old. Usually the youth that most people tend to write off or disregard, I gravitate towards them to let them know that they are special and loved just like anyone else. So my story began from childhood by seeing my great- grandmothers, grandmothers and parents open their home to all by sticking to those rules of community and we take care of our own. Upon going to the BEST high school in the USA but especially Maryland, Baltimore City College , #City4Eva, I was selected as president of the Youth Leadership Council, a partnership with The Johns Hopkins University, where we served the youth at the school and community. I fell in love with serving my community. After graduating I began working for Baltimore City, Healthy Start and my love for community grew into a passion and calling to help others. Working with the community as well as being involved with the youth at the church and in the neighborhood that is what helped me to form Destined for Greatness for what you see it is today. I wanted to be able to give families an opportunity to come and have fun without worrying about money. I want to be able to help educate our community on things that a lot of people do not know and I wanted it to be free of course for all; where the only requirement is that you be a child to enter the mentor program and to be an adult for the outreach program for the different resources we are connected to. We have services that service all ages from age 0 to 100. We have core value workshops as well as family fun day. We are donation based. Overall, the goal and motto is “We are not worried about income only outcomes”. In today’s society, we all need each other and a helping hand should just be a helping hand without any restriction.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s not always been a smooth road with this program however, by staying resilient, vigilant, consistent, present, honest, and transparent things have began to become smoother. One of the main struggles along the way was funding however, the community pulled together and we were able to work out a lot of those hurdles. We have partnerships with different corporations and sponsorships with local businesses as well and it is because of them that we are able to continue the work that we are doing. One thing my parents have always taught me is to follow my dreams and I dream big so they instilled in me at an early age to never give up and I just use that motivation and adaption to keep going and overcome the struggles that present themselves.
As you know, we’re big fans of Destined for Greatness Mentoring and Outreach . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Destined for Greatness Mentoring & Outreach Program is a program designed for people of all ages. We specialize in working with the youth and the community whether it’s being a mentor or an advocate at the school home, at court etc , but we service the whole family. One thing that sets us apart is we are a completely free program who only work off of donations ,we do not charge for services in any capacity at all. We host community events where we give back to the community we host a coat drive every year in January, a back to school Drive every year in August, We adopt families throughout the year just not at Christmas time and just try to be a resource for the community.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
When looking for mentor, make sure that it is a fit for you and for them it’s OK if you have to try different people until you find the one that is for you.
