Meet Sushmitha Pidatala of Arjuna

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sushmitha Pidatala.

Hi Sushmitha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Arjuna Design Studio was born during the pandemic while I was living in Houston. After nearly 15 years working in international development and women’s empowerment, including at the World Bank and the United Nations, I found myself wanting to build something more personal and creative.

As someone who is passionate about design and who deeply values my South Asian heritage, I saw an opportunity to bring the timeless elegance of South Asian home décor into the mainstream in a way that felt modern, elevated, and accessible.

What started as a passion project has grown into a curated home décor brand that celebrates craftsmanship and supports artisans around the world. At its heart, Arjuna is about helping people create beautiful, meaningful homes while honoring the stories and traditions behind each piece.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Building a product-based business means learning to navigate constant curveballs.

I launched Arjuna during COVID, which meant dealing with supply chain disruptions and uncertainty from day one. Since then, I’ve had to adapt to rising shipping costs, U.S.–India tariffs, and broader geopolitical events that directly affect sourcing and pricing.

As a founder, you quickly realize that uncertainty is part of the job. You can’t control every external factor, but you can control how you respond. Each challenge has forced me to become more resilient, more resourceful, and more strategic.

That’s one of the biggest lessons entrepreneurship has taught me: success isn’t about avoiding obstacles—it’s about learning how to pivot and keep moving forward.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Arjuna is a modern home décor brand on a mission to bring South Asian design into the mainstream. We create thoughtfully designed home goods that blend traditional Indian artistry with a clean, contemporary aesthetic.

What sets us apart is our commitment to storytelling and craftsmanship. We collaborate with skilled artisans and use heritage-inspired motifs to create pieces that feel both timeless and functional. Every product is designed to honor the beauty of South Asian culture while fitting seamlessly into modern homes around the world.

At our core, Arjuna is about preserving artistry, celebrating culture, and helping people create spaces with meaning. What I’m most proud of is building a brand that not only offers beautiful products, but also creates a deeper connection between the makers, the stories behind each design, and the customers who bring them into their homes.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
What might surprise people is that I started Arjuna Design Studio with no background in business, no roadmap, and very few industry connections. I didn’t have a built-in network in India or a team showing me how to do this—I’ve been figuring it out one step at a time.

There are plenty of moments of uncertainty, and even tears from the weight of it all. But that’s also what entrepreneurship looks like: learning as you go, trusting your vision, and continuing to build even when you don’t have all the answers.

I’m proud that Arjuna has been built from the ground up through persistence, intuition, and a genuine belief that South Asian design deserves a place in homes around the world.
