Meet Miles Blackman of Miles ahead tennis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miles Blackman.

Hi Miles, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey has brought together two interests: tennis and building things that help people. Over nearly a decade of coaching, I’ve worked with players at different stages, from beginners picking up a racket for the first time to experienced players looking to improve. What I enjoy most is seeing someone gain confidence, discover they can do something they didn’t think they could, and start looking forward to being on the court.

That’s the spirit behind Miles Ahead Tennis. I wanted to create a welcoming environment where people could improve their game, have fun, and build connections. Our approach is centered on “Fun + Improvement,” and that guides how we run our private lessons, group clinics, and community events in the Maryland and D.C. area.

Through coaching, I also saw how important it is for people to have opportunities to play outside of lessons. Learning the sport is one part of the experience; finding people to play with and staying involved is another. That helped shape the idea for the Miles Ahead Tennis app, which brings together player connections, instructional content, and access to classes.

Alongside tennis, I founded StartToPivot, a web development and consulting business. Working in that space has helped me think about how technology can solve practical problems. With the tennis app, I’ve been able to bring those interests together and build something connected to the community I work with every day.

Today, I’m continuing to grow Miles Ahead Tennis both on the court and through the app. It’s an ongoing process of listening to players, learning, and refining the experience. My goal is to help more people feel comfortable getting started, find a community, and make tennis a lasting part of their lives.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest challenges has been growing Miles Ahead Tennis while protecting what has made it successful: the community. As we introduce the app, I want people to understand that it’s an extension of that experience. The purpose is to help people connect, feel welcome, and spend more time on the court.

I designed the app around how I, as a player, would want to meet and connect with other players. There can be a lot of gatekeeping in tennis, and getting involved can feel intimidating when you don’t already know people or have an established group. I want Miles Ahead Tennis to help break down those barriers and make the sport as accessible as possible, regardless of someone’s background, experience, or existing connections.

Communicating that has been a challenge in itself. It’s easy for the conversation to become about the technology or the features, but the relationships people build are what give those features value. We want someone who discovers us through the app to feel the same sense of belonging as someone who comes to one of our classes.

There are also the everyday challenges of balancing coaching, running a business, and developing something new. I’m learning to prioritize, listen to feedback, and grow at a pace that allows us to maintain the quality of the experience. Through all of that, the goal stays the same: helping more people find their place in tennis.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Miles Ahead Tennis is a tennis coaching and community business based in Maryland. We offer adult and junior group classes, private lessons, and events that bring people together through the sport. Our approach is “Fun + Improvement”: helping players develop their skills while enjoying the process and feeling comfortable enough to keep coming back.

We put a lot of thought into the experience of someone walking onto the court for the first time. You don’t need an established tennis circle or years of experience to get involved. Whether you’re learning the basics, returning after time away, or working to become a more confident player, we want you to feel like you belong.

What sets us apart is the connection between coaching and community. We care about how people progress, but also about who they meet and whether they leave excited to play again. I’m most proud of the community aspect of the brand and the welcoming environment we’ve built around learning and improving together.

The Miles Ahead Tennis app extends that mission beyond our classes. It helps players find others to play with, connect through messaging, access instructional videos and courses, and register for classes. I designed it around how I would want to connect with others as a player, with the goal of making it easier to get on court and stay involved.

What I want readers to know is that there’s a place for them in tennis. You can come to us to learn, improve, meet people, or simply make time for something you enjoy. Our goal is to make that first step feel approachable and give you reasons to keep playing.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see tennis continuing to grow over the next five to ten years, with community and social experiences playing a big role in bringing new people into the sport. I’ve seen it firsthand at my events: people come because they want to try something new, meet people, and have fun. That first experience can spark an interest they never expected.

I’ve heard criticism of people getting into tennis primarily for the social aspect, especially if they aren’t enthusiasts yet. But I think that overlooks how a love for the game can develop. People don’t need to arrive already passionate about tennis. We should give them the opportunity to discover that passion.

I met a woman at a tennis event who initially came just to have fun. About a year later, she was playing at roughly a 3.5 level. That’s incredible progress, and it started with a positive social experience. It’s a reminder that someone’s reason for showing up on day one doesn’t determine how far they’ll go.

Looking ahead, I think we’ll see more opportunities that combine tennis, learning, and connection, along with easier ways for players to find each other and organize games. The opportunity is to make that first experience welcoming and give people a clear path to keep playing, whether they want to compete or simply enjoy the sport with friends.

That’s the future I want Miles Ahead Tennis to help build: more ways into the game, fewer barriers, and a community that welcomes people at every stage.
