Meet Lauren O’Byrne of Maryland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren O’Byrne.

Hi Lauren, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been the person with a camera in my hand. Whether I was on vacation, at an event, or simply spending time with friends and family, I wanted to capture the moment. I like to joke that my own terrible memory is partly to blame, but the truth is that preserving memories has always been important to me. Photographs let us revisit the people, places, and experiences that shape our lives, and that’s something I’ve valued for as long as I can remember.

I’m a lifelong adventurer originally from outside Philadelphia, and yes, that means I’ve been cheering for the Eagles and Phillies my entire life. These days, I’m also a season ticket holder for the Washington Spirit. Whether I’m traveling somewhere new, hiking a trail, attending a concert, or cheering from the stands, I’ve always been drawn to experiences and the stories they create. Photography became the natural way for me to preserve and share those stories.

In 2016, I began studying under Kathy Ricker of Love & Adventure Photography. She’s an internationally award winning photographer in weddings, epic elopements, and wildlife documentary covering African safaris to both poles. What started as a desire to improve my personal photography quickly became something bigger. Under Kathy’s mentorship, I developed both my technical skills and my understanding of how photography can capture genuine emotion and connection.

Then came 2020. Like many people, I suddenly found myself with extra time and a need to do something. I offered graduation sessions for a few friends of my chosen daughter, simply as a way to help families celebrate an important milestone during a difficult year. What I didn’t expect was how much I would love working with clients and helping them tell their stories. Those sessions became the spark that led me to officially launch Fearless Photo Company later that year.

Today, my aim is simple: to help people see themselves, celebrate their stories, and preserve the moments that matter most. Whether it’s a wedding day, an empowerment session, a family milestone, or simply someone deciding they deserve to be in front of the camera, I’m there as their personal hype woman. There will be laughter, there may be happy tears, and there will definitely be memories you’ll treasure for years to come.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have mentors like Kathy and a wonderful creative community supporting me along the way but there’s always bumps. Photography, like any creative pursuit, comes with a constant cycle of learning, experimenting, succeeding, and sometimes falling short. There have been sessions where everything clicked and others where I walked away replaying every decision in my head, thinking about what I could have done better. Those moments can be discouraging, but they’ve also been some of the greatest teachers. Every time I pick up my camera, I have another opportunity to grow.

One of the biggest challenges has been navigating the modern digital landscape. Years ago, a photographer’s primary focus was creating great work. Today, you’re also expected to be a marketer, social media strategist, advertiser, content creator, and business owner – all while staying creative. It can feel like you’re spending as much time trying to be seen as you are creating the work itself.

Many people only see the few hours I’m behind the camera, but they don’t consider the planning, scouting, editing, continuing education, and countless hours spent honing my craft. We live in a world where content is everywhere and that can sometimes make creative work seem effortless or disposable. The reality is that every image represents years of practice, experience, and dedication.

What keeps me going is the impact. It’s the newlywed who tears up when they see a photograph from their wedding day. It’s the client who tells me, “I never thought I could look like that.” It’s helping someone see themselves in a way they never have before. Those moments remind me why I do this work. The road hasn’t always been easy, but every challenge has strengthened my skills, deepened my appreciation for the craft, and reinforced my belief that photography is about so much more than taking pictures – it’s about helping people tell their stories.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
“Telling your story and showcasing the authentic you” is at the heart of everything I do. I often say that every session with me is an adventure, one designed specifically for you! I’m known for creating an environment where clients feel so comfortable that they forget they’re being photographed. We share stories, laugh a lot, and end up making memories while capturing them.

Some of the work I’m most proud of is my empowerment and lifestyle photography. And these sessions aren’t just for women! They’re for singer-songwriters, writers, models, professionals, and anyone who wants to celebrate themselves or mark a meaningful chapter in their life. My goal is to bring each client’s vision to life. Every detail is thoughtfully planned, from locations and wardrobe to hair, makeup, and posing. The most rewarding part is watching clients see themselves in a new light through the final images. One of my favorite reactions is, “That can’t be me!” because I get to remind them that it absolutely is.

Wedding photography is equally special to me. It’s exhilarating because there are no second chances, you have to be present, prepared, and ready for every moment. My couples often tell me I was exactly who they needed on their wedding day. Whether it’s keeping everyone on schedule, wrangling the wedding party for portraits, or making sure the couple has a moment to breathe and enjoy the day, I help create a calm, positive experience so they can focus on celebrating.

What sets me apart is the connection I build with people. Technical skill is important, but the best photographs happen when people feel seen, valued, and comfortable enough to be themselves. That’s why my clients return, recommend me to others, and trust me with some of the most meaningful moments of their lives. I don’t just take photos, I help people tell their stories.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Baltimore and the DMV have so much energy and diversity. There’s truly always something happening. As someone who loves live performances, I especially enjoy the concerts, festivals, and cultural events. You can find me exploring local breweries, wineries, and distilleries. And in the fall, catch me at the Maryland Renaissance Festival working for the blacksmith Tommy Carroll of Mountain Rain Forge! People here are passionate about their communities, and that enthusiasm is contagious. As a photographer, I love that there are endless opportunities to capture the moment. From colorful neighborhood murals to quiet sunrise moments along the water, I never run out of inspiration. I also appreciate that you can experience history, nature, and vibrant city life all in one place; that combination feels uniquely DMV.

I don’t think it will surprise anyone when I say that traffic is my least favorite part. I would love to see more robust public transit and pedestrian-friendly options throughout the region. That said, even the commute has its silver lining. It’s led me to explore neighborhoods I might never have visited otherwise, discover hidden photography locations, and experience different corners of the area that have inspired some of my favorite images.
