Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Dodson.
Hi Kevin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Kevin Dodson, and since my childhood, I have been deeply passionate about anime, video games, and otaku culture. Growing up during the Toonami era, I was captivated by the initial televised expansion of anime, particularly through shows like Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Dragon Ball Z, and Sailor Moon.
This interest was matched by my love for video games, which began when I received my first PlayStation. The vivid worlds and engaging mechanics of gaming inspired me to pursue a degree in game design at the University of Baltimore, where I sought to create projects that paid homage to my childhood favorites.
During my studies, I also developed a strong interest in games journalism, inspired by my years reading Game Informer, watching G4TV, and following E3. When the pandemic encouraged me to reflect on my aspirations, I finally decided to launch a YouTube channel.
Having always enjoyed discussing, debating, and reviewing media with friends, I wanted to share my perspectives with a wider audience. My channel began with a Street Fighter DLC wishlist, and it has since grown into a platform featuring hundreds of videos, including reviews, news, and collaborative content.
What began as a hobby has become a meaningful endeavor, allowing me to find my niche and connect with others who share my enthusiasm for these interests.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a rough road, but I have stuck with it. I have a background in graphic design, but making videos is a whole different ballgame; it involves learning to edit, finding creative shots, and scripting ideas into something fun. It is definitely a skill you have to sharpen over time.
I once heard that your first video will be bad, so just post it anyway. I took that to heart, and over the years I have learned a lot from putting something out there and taking honest feedback to improve it.
I also know I am in a niche but crowded market. Gaming and anime are huge, so I had to find my own corner to build an audience.
One of my biggest struggles has been internal. I have a speech impediment, but I have never let it stop me. Sometimes I do 100 takes just to make sure I am clear and easy to understand. I work really hard to make sure I am heard.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I cover gaming and anime events, industry news, and post high-level gameplay videos. I love diving into trending topics, from layoffs to the current state of the anime industry. Even though I am not a developer, having worked on and released my own game gives me an informed perspective on the industry and the challenges creators face, which sets me apart. I am known for sharing bold, authentic opinions that can get a bit controversial. I am also part of the fighting game community; I am no expert, but I have built a niche by letting viewers watch my progress from rookie to higher ranks, all while creating an open and friendly community. I am proud of my “Can’t Skip the Classics” series, where I highlight overlooked anime that modern fans often miss because they think they are dated. What makes me different is my experience as an older otaku. I was watching anime before the big shift. I was watching weekly anime before it became mainstream. This allows me to create content from the perspective of a veteran. This approach has helped me connect with passionate communities and find my own spot in the media landscape.
What were you like growing up?
I was a pretty normal kid, but I definitely did my own thing. I grew up with a twin brother and an older sister in a typical middle-class household where our parents took good care of us. I’ll always be grateful that they let me be myself. I was a bit of a rebel and a rocker growing up. I spent my teen years blasting heavy metal and going to concerts since I was 14, but I still managed to keep my grades up. My love for anime and video games was how I rebelled. I wasn’t into polo shirts or Nikes; I preferred band tees and Vans. I got into Japanese culture early on, getting really into J-Rock, Visual Kei, and Shibuya-kei. Anime has always been a huge part of my life, from joining anime clubs back in the day to being a cosplayer at conventions now. My interests haven’t changed much: I’m still a massive fan of fighting games, obsessed with anime, and I love pro wrestling, whether it’s WWE, AEW, or New Japan.
