Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Mauger.
Chris, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in a rural town in Eastern PA. Throughout my school years, I was not a good student, but I worked hard enough to earn a business degree. I landed my first job at 15 and secured my first assistant management position immediately after college graduation. I skipped the graduation ceremony to work, and even went to work the morning of my wedding (not my smartest choice).
After working in retail management for 10 years, I decided it was time for a change. This led me to return to school to pursue a master’s degree and embark on a new career path.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My family and I (I had three children by this time) moved to NC in 2000 to attend Bible seminary. God had called us to move overseas, and one of the requirements for going was to have a master’s degree.
In September 2004, we moved to Lucknow, India. On average, we lived there for three years and then spent six months back in the US. We did this for nine years, and then moved to Chittagong, Bangladesh, for 11 years. Our two main tasks while living abroad were to help meet humanitarian needs and share the message of Jesus with the local people.
Living in foreign countries came with challenges, but I would not trade the experience. I learned to persevere and thrive even in difficult situations.
For example, one of the houses I lived in has been titled “the bad house” by my family. During the summer, the electricity was out for eight-plus hours every night, the temperature reached 95, and I survived. Likewise, when friends served me goat intestines or goat fat, I learned to appreciate their generosity, even if I did not like the food.
I have not taken the easy road, but I would have it no other way. I am still learning and still enjoying the thrill of life by working through challenges.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Currently, I am the pastor of a small church. The church has a long history in the area and wants to become a place where people receive love, care, and spiritual healing.
My favorite part of the job is meeting new people. Everyone has an interesting story and the potential to be used by God. I also like to preach, but only because I can explain how the stories apply to our lives today.
I now have two Master’s Degrees and a Doctorate. I am a professional life coach, and I have written three books.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Pasadena is located in a great area. No matter which way I turn, I will find water. Second, it is close to major cities. Third, there are a number of good people here with me.
