Meet Cheyanne Zahrt of Maryland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheyanne Zahrt.

Hi Cheyanne, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have been a Baltimore City Educator for 24 years. I began as a science teacher in 2002 at Lake Clifton Eastern High School. I quickly fell in love with the city and the students, especially the class of 2005. Over the years as a teacher I took on mentorship and support activities for the students, which led many of my supervisors to see my leadership potential. In 2007 I began my leadership work as the Director of College and Career Readiness at ACCE High School. Over the last 19 years as a school leader in various capacities I have had the privilege to mentor and work with students, staff and families. When I started at City Neighbors in 2011, I quickly realized the importance of our mission, Known Loved and Inspired Academically. Knowing and Loving students is at the core of my belief in education. We can get students to make academic gains but it starts with a culture where they are seen as people, not just numbers. This is my 10th year as principal and on June 5th I celebrated the 20th class of students I have graduated in City Schools. I believe that I have been able to continue this work because of all of the stakeholders and the belief in my students.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road. There are numerous changes in educational policies and the impact of social media and technology has had a huge impact on young adults and how they learn. There is a very negative impact of telephones and social media in the classroom. The Covid-19 pandemic was also a very difficult time to educate students.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the Principal of City Neighbors High School.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the people in Baltimore, it is a very quirky place with a lot of different communities. I appreciate that I can live and work in the same place and have access to a lot of different things for my family.
