Meet Brandon Carels of BJ and son property management

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Carels.

Hi Brandon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey to where I am today has not been a straight or easy road. I had a troubled childhood, and for many years I struggled to find the right direction for my life. As a young man, I made poor choices that eventually led to me serving more than three years in federal prison.

Prison could have been the end of my story, but instead, it became a turning point. It forced me to take an honest look at myself, the decisions I had made, and the kind of future I wanted. I realized that if my life was going to change, I had to take responsibility for it. I couldn’t keep blaming my childhood, my circumstances, or anyone else. I had to become my own man and start making better decisions.

While incarcerated, I began thinking seriously about becoming a business owner. I spent time developing ideas and imagining how I could build something legitimate when I came home. After my release, a friend and I took that vision and started a property management business. We didn’t have a lot in the beginning, but we were willing to work. We took on whatever jobs we could find, worked long hours, learned from our mistakes, and slowly built a reputation for doing dependable, quality work.

Over the years, that small beginning grew into BJ and Son Property Management. Today, we provide landscaping, property maintenance, drainage, hardscaping, fencing, cleanups, and many other services throughout Maryland’s Eastern Shore and the surrounding area. Building this company has taught me that success is not something that happens overnight. It comes from showing up consistently, keeping your word, treating people fairly, and continuing to move forward when things become difficult.

My life also changed when I met my wife, Andrea. Together, we have built a family with four children. Being a husband and father has given my life a purpose that I didn’t understand when I was younger. My family has shown me what responsibility, commitment, and unconditional love truly mean. They are a major reason I work so hard and continue trying to become a better man.

One of the accomplishments I am most proud of is being sober for 11 years(12 at Christmas). Sobriety has allowed me to be present for my family, make clearer decisions, grow my business, and become someone other people can rely on. It hasn’t always been easy, but every year represents another year that I chose a different path.

Today, I try to be a positive part of my community. Whether I am helping a customer, supporting another local business, providing jobs, participating in local organizations, or using my social media platform to bring people together, I want my presence to make a difference. I know what it feels like to be judged by your worst decisions, so I try not to judge people solely by theirs. I believe people can change when they take responsibility, receive an opportunity, and are willing to do the work.

I don’t hide my past because it is part of what made me who I am. At the same time, I refuse to let it define the rest of my life. I went from a troubled childhood and federal prison to becoming a sober husband, father, business owner, and active member of my community.

My story is not about being perfect. It is about redemption, perseverance, and proving that your worst chapter does not have to be the final chapter. I am proud of how far I have come, but I also know that I am still growing. Every day, I try to build a better life for my family, create opportunities for others, and leave behind something positive.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In business I feel we have always been the outsiders.
We have had to claw our way into rooms that other people seem born into or walked right into.
There is also a learning curve in business, that cant be taught.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
