Today we’d like to introduce you to Abi Fapohunda.
Hi Abi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been creative. Drawing, making things, coming up with ideas, and experimenting visually were things I naturally gravitated toward growing up.
My path into design wasn’t completely straightforward, though. I’ve worked different jobs, explored different creative disciplines, and spent a lot of time figuring out where my strengths actually fit. Over time, design became the thing that connected everything for me because it gave me a way to combine creativity, problem-solving, storytelling, and technology.
A lot of my growth has come from learning by doing. I’ve continued developing my skills, taking on different types of creative work, and becoming more intentional about the kind of designer and artist I want to be.
Today, I’m building Verum Artifex Studios as a multidisciplinary creative practice while continuing to grow my work across design, visual storytelling, and emerging technology. I’m still evolving, but I think the biggest difference now is that I have a much clearer sense of my own creative voice and the direction I want to take it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. A lot of the challenge has been figuring things out without a completely clear path in front of me.
There have been periods where I was balancing regular jobs with trying to build a creative career, develop my skills, and create opportunities for myself at the same time. That can be difficult because you know what you’re capable of, but your circumstances don’t always reflect that yet.
I’ve also had to learn how to trust my own direction. When you’re interested in a lot of different things creatively, it can take time to understand how they all connect instead of feeling like you have to choose one narrow lane.
I think the biggest lesson has been learning to keep moving even when the progress doesn’t look dramatic. A lot of the growth has happened quietly through consistency, experimentation, and continuing to create even when things weren’t completely figured out.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At the core, I’m a visual artist and designer who likes building worlds around ideas.
My work can move between branding, illustration, visual identity, digital design, storytelling, and creative direction, but the common thread is that I’m always trying to create something with a distinct point of view.
I’m most proud of the work where I’ve been able to combine design with storytelling and experimentation, especially when I’m exploring new tools or new ways of creating. What sets me apart is that I don’t really separate art, design, and technology in my process. I see them as different tools for expressing the same idea.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m looking forward to expanding the scale of the work I’m doing.
That means larger creative projects, stronger collaborations, and opportunities to work across design, entertainment, technology, and storytelling in ways that challenge me creatively.
I’m also continuing to grow Verum Artifex Studios and shape it into a platform for more ambitious ideas. I don’t want to limit myself to one discipline, so a big part of the future is continuing to build at the intersections between them.
