Life & Work with TieSha Carter of Maryland

Today we’d like to introduce you to TieSha Carter.

Hi TieSha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began making Jewelry shortly after I was diagnosed with severe anxiety and was home on short term disability. I needed something to occupy my time and help me cope in a healthy way. Something that could occupy my mind and distract me from my anxious thoughts. After watching a few YouTube videos (specifically online courses offered by Michael’s craft store) I realized that the beading and stringing just came naturally. Over time my family saw my pieces and began to encourage me to sell them and that’s how Jacx Carter Designs started.

All of the pieces I create comes from a place of healing. I was really struggling, anxiety at a high level and finding something I loved and that came naturally pulled me out of that dark space. Every single piece I make, I make myself. Nothing is drawn up ahead of time. It all comes free flow with how I’m feeling in the moment.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has definitely not been a smooth road. I have lost a lot of money on opportunities that I thought were legitimate only to be scammed and never receive the output I was offered. I’ve wanted to give up a number of times due to slow sales and constantly putting in more money than I’m getting back.

But I remember I started this to cope with my anxiety. It’s still my place to get away, still my creative outlet. And I keep reminding myself — just because it’s not happening right now doesn’t mean the door isn’t out there. It is. I just haven’t found it yet.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a jewelry designer and owner of Jacx Carter Designs handmade jewelry. I am known for making small batch and one of kind earrings, necklaces and bracelets for women that want to be safely bold. I think what sets me apart from others is that I help people find the perfect piece for themselves or someone they love something that just says “this is so you” or “this is so me”. I’m not overcoming an obstacle. I’m accentuating what’s already there and matching what’s on the inside to something they can wear on the outside.

I love that my customers introduce me by saying “she makes unique pieces, so everybody won’t have what you have.” I don’t rush. I don’t copy patterns. Everything flows freely from whatever I’m feeling in the moment and that means what you get from me exists nowhere else.

What were you like growing up?
I was a very shy and soft-spoken child growing up. I spent a lot of time with my grandmothers and a select few friends. When I think back my grandmothers introduced me to fashion and accessories through their own unique styles. I was always focused on whatever task I set my mind to accomplish and therefore was buried in books through high school and college (I guess you can say I was kind of a nerd). However, my mind loved and always found peace and curiosity in the creative arts. So much so that I explored painting and film photography in my high school and young adult years.
