Life & Work with Terrace Blake of Maryland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrace Blake.

Hi Terrace, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into mental health wasn’t only a career choice; it was where a deep desire and fascination for people and their worldview developed, and where I felt I could best assist in helping others to understand their internal and external worlds.

Since working in the mental health field in 2018, I have learned how to sit with people starting at the foundational level of their lives and continuously learn how to build with them through clinical practice and practical knowledge. After completing my Master’s degree, I stepped into my work as a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor here in Maryland in 2024. Working directly with clients in therapy has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my life—guiding individuals through growth, emotional wellness, and personal transformation.

As my clinical experience grew, so did my desire to make mental health topics more approachable, relatable, and accessible outside the traditional therapy office while connecting those ideas and experiences to Christian faith. That passion led me to expand into community education and content creation, including launching my podcast, That Girl Is A Therapist, where I blend honest reflections, mental health insights, and everyday personal growth with Christian faith, principles, and practice.

Today, I’m proud to serve my local community in Maryland as a counselor and advocate. Whether I’m working directly with individuals in clinical settings or creating content that encourages self-care and authentic living, my goal remains the same: demystifying mental health and empowering people to show up fully as themselves.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! The road has been rocky, shaky, and even a few times I have driven off-road. However, I find that even in my challenges, it made the destination more meaningful.

The hurdles of completing graduate coursework, working through multiple feelings of imposter syndrome, and finding the work-life balance were a journey within themselves. However, each part and piece was essential in my self-discovery as I grew as a therapist.

Another ongoing challenge—and something almost every mental health professional faces—has been learning how to balance empathy with sustainable boundaries. Doing heavy emotional work every day means you have to constantly practice what you preach about self-care, rest, and protecting your own mental space.

More recently, stepping out from behind the traditional clinical curtain to build a public platform and launch a podcast brought its own learning curve. Overcoming the fear of putting my voice and perspective out there required stepping far outside my comfort zone.

Looking back, none of those struggles were roadblocks; they were refining moments. Every obstacle helped shape my resilience, my empathy as a counselor, and my confidence to advocate for mental wellness in a bigger, more authentic way.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC) and mental health therapist here in Maryland and Resident in Counseling in Virginia. In my clinical work, I specialize in helping individuals navigate life transitions, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, identity development, emotional regulation, and boundary-setting. My practice is grounded in creating a safe, compassionate, collaborative, and non-judgmental space where clients can unlearn counterproductive patterns, process their experiences, and cultivate deep self-awareness.

What sets my approach apart—and what I’m increasingly known for—is bridging the gap between clinical depth and real-world accessibility. I believe therapy shouldn’t feel intimidating or detached from everyday life. I believe in collaboration in therapy, where a journey is curated for others to not walk alone.

I am most proud of stepping into my purpose without boxing myself in. Completing my Master’s degree and building a career in mental health was a major personal and professional milestone, but creating a platform where people feel seen, validated, and encouraged to heal outside of formal therapy sessions has been deeply fulfilling.

How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in luck or bad luck—I believe in purpose and redirection. Admittedly, there have been ups and downs, highs and lows in both my life and my work. However, every season has either led me deeper into my God-given purpose or redirected me to exactly where God intended for me to be.
