Life & Work with Tamika Williams of Hyattsville, MD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamika Williams.

Hi Tamika, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story really began in fifth grade when I was labeled the troubled child and faced very low expectations about my future. But I had a village of women who believed in me when I did not believe in myself. By ninth grade, I made a decision to change my trajectory, earned a 3.85 GPA my first semester of high school, went on to earn three degrees, and built a successful federal career.

While completing my bachelor’s degree, I began mentoring young girls because I saw myself in them. What started as a small effort grew into Beautiful As I Am, Inc., an organization focused on equipping girls and women with life and social skills so they can grow personally, professionally, and educationally. Over time, we expanded to include literacy programs, mentoring initiatives, women’s circles, and even international outreach.

As the work grew, I also launched Poised Creatives to help visionaries structure their ideas into sustainable programs and brands. Today, I see myself as an Impact Builder and Village Builder. Everything I do is centered on building people from the inside out and creating systems that change lives for the long term.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road.

In the beginning, one of my biggest fears was that people would not support what I was building. And the truth is, at first, they didn’t. I was doing everything on my own. Picking the girls up. Paying for food out of my own pocket. Creating the activities. Checking in with them during the week. Driving them back home. I would plan sessions and sometimes barely anyone showed up. There were days I sat there wondering if I had made a mistake. It felt lonely. It felt heavy.

There were also financial pressures and emotional moments where I questioned myself. Balancing leadership, family, career, and community work is not easy. There were times I was tired but still had to show up strong. Times when the vision felt bigger than the support around me.

But I kept going. I decided that even if it was small, I would treat it like it was big. I stayed consistent. I showed up when no one else did. And eventually, people started to notice. The support grew. The impact grew. Looking back, the hard seasons shaped me into the leader I am today. They taught me resilience, discipline, and faith in the process.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a social impact leader, mentor trainer, and community builder who focuses on developing girls and women from the inside out. As the founder and executive director of Beautiful As I Am, Inc., I design and lead programs centered on life and social skills, confidence, literacy, emotional wellness, and leadership development. I also lead Poised Creatives, where I help entrepreneurs and nonprofit founders take their ideas and turn them into structured, sustainable programs and brands. At my core, I see myself as an Impact Builder. I build people, and I build systems that create lasting change.

I am probably best known for my village philosophy. I openly share my story of being labeled a troubled child in fifth grade and how a group of women believed in me until I could believe in myself. That experience shaped everything I do. I do not just motivate people. I create structure, accountability, and real pathways for growth. Whether I am leading a book club for young girls, hosting women’s circles, training mentors, or helping founders refine their vision, my work is rooted in practical development and measurable impact.

What I am most proud of are the transformations. The shy girl who now reads confidently. The teen who finds her voice. The woman who achieves something she once thought was impossible. I am proud that I built something from the ground up through consistency and belief, even when support was limited in the beginning. What sets me apart is that I teach from lived experience. I have applied the principles I share. I combine compassion with accountability and strategy with heart. I am not just building programs. I am building futures.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I have learned is that leadership starts within. Before anyone else believes in the vision, you have to be rooted in it yourself. There were moments when progress felt slow and growth felt invisible, but I realized that building something meaningful requires patience, discipline, and emotional maturity. You cannot lead others if you are constantly shaken by every challenge. You have to be grounded in your purpose.

I have also learned that impact is not about popularity. It is about depth. Real change happens in quiet conversations, in small consistent efforts, and in showing up over and over again. When you focus on serving well instead of being seen, the work becomes stronger, the foundation becomes solid, and the results become sustainable.
