Today we’d like to introduce you to Marc Scott.
Hi Marc, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am an artist and musician, as an independent artist I do commissions and I publish my own comic book. My late Uncle Howard was a true renaissance man, he was an opera singer, actor, teacher, forensic judge, he was a great inspiration for me. He showed me how to embrace being an artist. So from a young age I started singing wherever I could, From the time I was in middle school friends and classmates had me drawing Looney Toons and Simpsons characters on jeans and t-shirts. By the time I was near the end of high school I was in local bands and I was doing freelance art. Over the years I hav done work with JGM Comics as well as Red Anvil Comics, during the pandemic I worked on my own character Cylore and released it in 2022, this year it will be rereleased in full color as well as adding a backup story of another character Pounce. As far as music goes these days I still preform solo and then with London Muse a working class British rock band.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As an artist I had a setback when I was a senior in high school I had a head injury that had me lose my color vision. So, I ended up focusing on inking. I have ended up working with some great pencilled as well as colorists.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a storyteller, although I work in more than one medium.
As a musician and songwriter, I’ve spent years performing, writing, and developing my own voice. With London Muse and in my own songwriting, I’m drawn to music that has something to say—songs about relationships, grief, hope, getting older, finding your people, and realizing there are still chapters of your life you haven’t lived yet. I love music that can be thoughtful without losing the energy and connection of a live rock show.
I’m also a comic-book writer, artist, and creator. I created my own superhero universe, Earth 1994, and have taken characters such as Cylore from an idea on a page all the way to a published comic. I’m continuing to build that world through characters like Pounce and a growing cast of heroes and villains. What excites me most isn’t simply creating superheroes with interesting powers; it’s figuring out who these people are when the costume comes off. Family, friendship, responsibility, humor, loss, and the choices people make with whatever power they’ve been given are what make those stories matter to me.
What I’m most proud of is that I’ve kept creating.
My creative career hasn’t followed a straight line. Music, comics, education, ministry, family, and everyday life have all intersected with it. Rather than seeing those experiences as detours, I think they’ve made me a better storyteller. I have more to write about now than I did when I was twenty.
What sets me apart is probably that combination. I can stand on a stage and connect with a room through a song, sit at a drawing table and build a superhero world, or write a story about an extraordinary character while still being interested in the very ordinary human being underneath.
Whether it’s three chords, a comic-book page, or an entire fictional universe, I’m ultimately trying to do the same thing: tell stories that make people feel something, recognize something of themselves, and hopefully walk away with a little more hope than they had before.
How do you define success?
Keeping with ideas continuing from inception until things are able to find an audience. Sometimes that is a song that gets sung at a venue, a commission of art or moreover my self published comic Cylore as the beginning of Cylore goes back to 94 and found initial release in black and white, by end of year I hope to have it available in color as well as ten page back up story for Pounce.
