Life & Work with Leah Seeling of Baltimore County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Seeling.

Hi Leah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my career as a social worker in the state of Maryland, a role that deeply shaped who I am. I loved advocating for others, but after becoming a mother myself, I found it increasingly difficult to leave work at work. Carrying the emotional weight of my job while navigating motherhood eventually led to burnout. During that season, I realized I needed an outlet that brought joy, balance, and creativity back into my life. That’s when I started mdfunfam as a hobby — simply sharing local outings and experiences with my family. What began as a personal reset quickly grew into a passion project centered on encouraging other caregivers to step outside, explore, and make core memories with the people they love. Today, mdfunfam reflects both my background in supporting families and my belief that shared experiences, fun, and connection are just as important as the work we do every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. In the beginning, balancing content creation with motherhood and everyday life was a challenge, especially since mdfunfam started as a hobby, not a business. I also had to work through self-doubt — wondering if sharing our experiences would really help or resonate with other families. Learning the social media landscape, staying consistent, and giving myself grace during busy seasons were all struggles along the way. But each challenge reinforced why I started mdfunfam in the first place: to encourage caregivers to get out, create core memories, and realize they’re not alone in the journey.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Through mdfunfam, I create and share family-friendly experiences, outings, and resources that help caregivers get out of the house and make meaningful core memories with their kids. I specialize in highlighting accessible, realistic activities—especially local gems—that fit into real life with children, not just picture-perfect moments. My background as a former social worker shapes everything I do; I approach this work with empathy, inclusivity, and an understanding of how important support and community are for caregivers.

I’m known for being honest, relatable, and family-centered. I don’t just share where to go, but why it matters—connection, presence, and joy in everyday moments. What I’m most proud of is the community that has grown around mdfunfam and the messages from caregivers who say they’ve felt encouraged to try something new or felt less alone because of my content.

What sets me apart is my perspective. I understand burnout, mental load, and the emotional side of caregiving, and I intentionally create content that feels doable rather than overwhelming. mdfunfam isn’t about perfection—it’s about showing up, getting out, and making memories that actually last.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about Baltimore is its heart. The city has such a strong sense of community, culture, and pride, and that shows up in the neighborhoods, local businesses, history, and arts scene. There’s so much character here, and so many family-friendly experiences—from waterfront spots to museums and local events—that make it easy to create meaningful memories without going far. Baltimore feels real, resilient, and deeply rooted in connection.

What I like least is that Baltimore is often misunderstood or overlooked because of its challenges. While no city is perfect, the negative narrative can overshadow the creativity, care, and joy that exist here every day. Navigating disparities, access, and safety concerns can also be tough for families, which is why I’m passionate about highlighting positive spaces and experiences that bring people together.
