Life & Work with Kyiamoni Brown of DMV

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyiamoni Brown.

Kyiamoni, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey with baking started at home through a homeschool project my mom gave me. The assignment was simple: create something using a pumpkin. Instead of choosing something ordinary, I decided to make pumpkin bread. That experience sparked something in me. I loved the process turning raw ingredients into something comforting and meaningful and seeing how something I made with my own hands could bring joy to others.

From there, my passion for baking, especially cakes, continued to grow. What began as curiosity turned into a craft I wanted to master. I spent years experimenting, learning flavors, textures, and techniques, and pushing myself to improve with every bake. Over time, my skills evolved, my confidence grew, and what once started as a homeschool project became a true calling. Today, cakes are more than desserts to me they’re a way to tell stories, celebrate moments, and express creativity. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m excited to keep growing and sharing my love for baking with others.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many creative journeys, there were moments of doubt, limited resources, and times when I questioned whether I should keep going. Balancing life responsibilities while trying to grow my craft was challenging, and there were plenty of trial and error moments where things didn’t turn out as planned. There were also periods where progress felt slow, and I had to push through discouragement and keep believing in myself. However, those struggles taught me patience, resilience, and discipline. Each challenge helped shape not only my skills as a baker, but also my confidence and determination. Looking back, the obstacles were necessary they made the journey more meaningful and prepared me for where I am today.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a cake artist who specializes in baroque style cakes, focusing on intricate details, ornate textures, and designs that feel timeless yet unexpected. My work is known for pushing beyond traditional cake design I create cakes that people often can’t immediately identify as cakes. I love challenging the boundaries between art and dessert, transforming cakes into sculptural pieces that spark curiosity and conversation before they’re ever cut.

I’m most proud of staying true to my creative vision and developing a style that feels unmistakably my own. Being featured in For 5 was a major milestone for me and a reminder that my work resonates beyond my immediate circle. What sets me apart is my willingness to take risks, my attention to detail, and my commitment to creating cakes that feel like experiences not just desserts.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I see the cake and celebration industry continuing to evolve in exciting ways. People are looking for experiences as much as products, and that’s pushing cake artists to innovate beyond traditional designs. We’ll continue to see more sculptural, artistic, and unexpected creations that blur the lines between cake and fine art something I’m already passionate about.
