Today we’d like to introduce you to David Hercenberg.
David, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been drawn to storytelling and the power of visual media to capture people, places, and moments in a way that lasts. I studied Electronic Media and Film at Towson University, and early on I had the opportunity to work on projects that really shaped how I viewed filmmaking, including producing a documentary in Poland and Berlin focused on the history and personal stories surrounding World War II.
After college, I spent about 10 years teaching film while continuing to build my own work in photography and video. Eventually, I decided to make the leap and turn that passion into a full-time business, and Documented Video Productions was born.
Over the past 20 years, I’ve had the opportunity to film weddings, mitzvahs, corporate events, documentaries, interviews, testimonials, real estate, and all kinds of personal and professional stories. Every project has taught me something different, but the common thread has always been storytelling—finding the moments, people, and details that make a story meaningful.
Today, I see Documented as more than just a video production company. I want to be a creative resource for businesses, organizations, families, and individuals—to help them tell their stories, build their brands, preserve important memories, and connect with people through authentic visual content.
It’s been a long journey, and I’m still learning, experimenting, and evolving. That’s probably what I enjoy most about this business: every story is different, and there’s always another one to tell.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Being a small business owner means there are always ups and downs, and there have been plenty of moments where I’ve had to figure things out as I went.
One of the biggest challenges has been adapting to how quickly the industry changes. Technology, social media, the way people consume video, and even what clients expect from their content have all changed dramatically over the years. You have to constantly learn, invest, reinvent yourself, and find new ways to provide value.
There have also been quieter periods where business was slower and I had to really evaluate where I wanted to take the company and how to continue growing. Running a creative business can be rewarding, but it also comes with the pressure of managing the business side while still trying to stay creative.
But honestly, those challenges have probably been some of the most valuable parts of the journey. They’ve forced me to become more adaptable, more resilient, and more intentional about what Documented Video Productions can be.
I think the biggest lesson has been that success isn’t necessarily about having a perfectly smooth road. It’s about continuing to move forward when the road gets difficult.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Documented Video Productions is a visual storytelling and media company. We specialize in video production, photography, interviews, testimonials, corporate and promotional content, events, weddings, and documentary-style storytelling.
After 20 years in the industry, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a really wide range of projects. That experience has taught me that great video isn’t just about having good cameras or making something look polished—it’s about understanding the story and the people behind it.
For businesses, I help create content that allows them to tell their story, showcase their team, build their brand, connect with customers, and ultimately grow. That might be a testimonial from a happy client, a recruitment video, a property showcase, social media content, or a larger marketing piece.
On the personal side, I love documenting important moments—weddings, mitzvahs, families, performances, and celebrations. Those are the projects where you realize you’re not just creating a video; you’re preserving something people will be able to look back on years from now.
I think what sets me apart is the combination of experience, storytelling, and a personal approach. I don’t want to simply show up, turn on a camera, and leave. I want to understand what we’re trying to accomplish and figure out how the content can actually be useful and meaningful.
What I’m most proud of is the longevity. I’ve been able to build this business for 20 years while continuing to evolve with the industry. I’ve worked with so many different people and organizations, and I’ve been trusted with some really important moments and stories.
At the end of the day, the name Documented really says what I believe in: people have stories worth documenting. Whether it’s a business trying to grow or a family trying to preserve a moment in time, that’s what I’m most passionate about.
What’s next?
The future for Documented is really about continuing to evolve. Video production has changed so much over the past 20 years, and I don’t want to simply keep doing what I’ve always done. I want to continue building Documented into a creative media and storytelling agency that can be a long-term resource for businesses and organizations.
I’m especially interested in working more with local businesses, helping them consistently create the kind of visual content they need to market themselves—everything from testimonials and interviews to social media content, recruitment videos, photography, and promotional campaigns.
I’m also looking forward to expanding the creative side of the business, including podcast production, studio access, and more opportunities to collaborate with other creative professionals.
At the same time, I don’t want to lose the personal side of what I do. Weddings, families, events, documentaries, and preserving people’s stories will always be important to me.
Ultimately, I’d like Documented to become known as the place people go when they have a story they want to tell but aren’t quite sure how to tell it. Whether that’s a business trying to grow, a family preserving its history, or an organization trying to make an impact, I want to be the person they can call and say, “We have an idea—how can we bring this to life?”
There’s still a lot I want to accomplish, and honestly, after 20 years, I feel like I’m just getting started.
