Treena, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It began as a matter of necessity. When my middle son was born, I wanted to buy a nice layette set for his crib. I went to a high-end store to shop. The store representative asked if she could help and I told her what I was looking for. She told me, “The only way you can afford these is to make them yourself.” At first, I was offended but, then I thought, “She’s right. I can make these myself.” So, started my sewing journey in 1988.
After retiring from Federal Service I wanted to focus on my desire to help people express their individuality and style like no other. In today’s world of mass production, owning a handcrafted accessory is truly special. Every piece tells a unique story, Sweetpolly’s Creations helps them tell their story. Whether they are searching for a personalized memorial accessories, a quilted memory bear to handcrafted gifts for baby showers, housewarming, anniversaries and so much more – my handcrafted sewing and crafting store is here to assist.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Just because you make a product you think everyone will love doesn’t mean the road will be smooth. For me, it wasn’t. I would test my products at craft shows and sometimes I would get one sale. In the beginning I would make inventory instead of producing it as it was ordered. I wasted a lot of product that way. Funding was always an issue. Money was going out but, not much was coming in. One of the best pieces of advice I received, was not to treat my business as a hobby. Keep records, get a tax ID and be that legitimate business owner you want to be. The money that was refunded through my taxes was invested back into my business.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I grew up in New York City. I made a lot of memories there but, they weren’t my favorite ones. Spending the summer with my grandparents in North Carolina and hanging out with all my cousins was the absolute best. I have a really large family and most of them lived on the same road.
My grandfather had a working farm so for two months out of the year, I became a real country girl. I slopped the pigs, fished in a lake, made mud pies, danced in the rain and was told to leave the house and don’t come back until lunch time. It was a special kind of freedom.
