Inspiring Conversations with Kanav Markan of Markan Medical Associates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kanav Markan.

Hi Kanav, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born in Montgomery County, Maryland, and spent most of my childhood growing up in Anne Arundel County before later moving to Howard County. Growing up in Maryland and seeing the different communities across the state played a big role in shaping my interest in medicine and patient care.

I pursued medical school in the Caribbean, which was a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience that taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of connecting with people from different backgrounds. After medical school, I was fortunate to return home to Maryland and complete my Internal Medicine residency in Annapolis. Coming back to the area where I grew up made the experience especially meaningful because I was able to care for patients in the same communities that helped shape me.

Throughout my training, I developed a strong interest in primary care and building long-term relationships with patients. I enjoy not only managing medical conditions, but also helping patients navigate lifestyle changes, prevention, and overall wellness. Today, my focus is on continuing to grow as a physician, providing compassionate and evidence-based care, and making a positive impact in the Maryland community that has always been home to me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road, and honestly I think those challenges helped shape me both personally and professionally.

Early on, I initially pursued a master’s program while trying to get into a U.S. medical school, and during that time I had to really reassess how I learned and how I handled setbacks. I ultimately decided to pursue medical school in the Caribbean, which was a major life adjustment and came with its own academic and personal challenges. Throughout medical school, I had to develop better study habits, improve my discipline and time management, and learn how to adapt when things did not go as planned.

There were also challenges transitioning into residency. Intern year was a steep learning curve — balancing the pace, responsibility, and complexity of patient care while learning how to function efficiently within the healthcare system. Over time, I became more confident clinically, more organized, and better at adapting under pressure. I also discovered that I really enjoyed primary care because of the continuity, relationship-building, and opportunity to make a long-term impact on patients’ lives.

Looking back, I think those experiences taught me resilience, humility, and persistence. They also helped me become more empathetic toward patients and others going through difficult situations, because I understand firsthand what it feels like to face obstacles, adapt, and keep moving forward.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Markan Medical Associates, my goal is to provide patient-centered, evidence-based primary care with a strong emphasis on prevention, long-term health, and building meaningful relationships with patients over time. As a board-certified Internal Medicine physician, I enjoy helping adults navigate everything from routine preventive care and annual wellness visits to chronic disease management and same-day sick visits.

One of the things that sets our practice apart is the balance between personalized attention and modern, efficient care. I want patients to feel heard, informed, and actively involved in their healthcare decisions. I take pride in spending time listening to patients, explaining conditions clearly, and creating practical treatment plans tailored to each individual rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Our practice focuses heavily on preventive medicine and helping patients stay healthy long term through lifestyle counseling, routine screenings, and early intervention whenever possible. We also manage a wide range of chronic conditions including hypertension, diabetes, asthma, high cholesterol, thyroid disorders, and many other common internal medicine concerns.

In addition to routine primary care services, we offer convenient in-office services such as flu shots, ear lavage/ear irrigations, EKGs, wellness visits, and other office-based procedures designed to make care more accessible and convenient for patients.

I am especially proud to be serving the Maryland community where I was born and raised. After completing residency training in Annapolis, I wanted to build a practice rooted in compassion, accessibility, and continuity of care. My vision for Markan Medical Associates is to create a welcoming environment where patients feel comfortable, respected, and confident that they have a physician who genuinely cares about their long-term well-being.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories was spending summers with my cousins and younger siblings, especially playing tennis at summer camp and just spending time together outside without worrying about anything else. Those are some of the moments I look back on most fondly because they were simple, fun, and centered around family.

I was also a huge fan of the anime show Dragon Ball Z growing up, and as funny as it sounds, I think it actually taught me a lot about persistence and resilience at a young age. The idea of continuing to push forward and improve yourself even when things are difficult is something that stayed with me throughout school, medical training, and life in general.

Looking back, I think those experiences shaped a lot of who I am today — valuing close relationships, staying motivated through challenges, and appreciating the importance of balance outside of work.
