Hidden Gems: Meet Silk Davis of Cuttz By Silk Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Silk Davis.

Hi Silk, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey started when I was 16 years old, but barbering was already in my blood. My father was a barber, so I grew up around the culture. What started as me learning how to cut hair eventually became something much bigger than I could have imagined.

Early on, I realized I didn’t just want to be good at cutting hair I wanted to understand the business of barbering. I wanted to build a name, create a brand, and give people an experience that went beyond sitting in a barber chair. Over the years, I stayed consistent, continued learning, invested in myself, and built relationships with people from all walks of life.

More than 20 years later, Cuttz By Silk has grown from my name behind the chair into a brand. I’ve had opportunities to work with entertainers, athletes, comedians, television and movie productions, and thousands of clients throughout my career. In 2025, I was blessed to receive the Crown Award for Best Barber in Baltimore, which meant a lot because Baltimore is home and the city played such a major part in my journey.

Today, I operate my own private studio, Cuttz By Silk Studio, but I’ve also worked hard to expand beyond the chair. I’ve developed my own grooming products, created Cuttz By Silk Radioa online radio station, built my platform through social media and content creation, and wrote my first book, The Barber’s Bible: Entrepreneur’s Guide to Success, where I share the lessons and knowledge I’ve gained throughout my career.

For me, the biggest evolution has been understanding that I’m not just a barber I’m an entrepreneur who happens to be great at barbering. The haircut opened the door, but the relationships, discipline, branding, consistency, and business mindset allowed me to walk through it.

And I’m still building. I don’t look at where I am today as the finish line. I look at it as proof that if you stay consistent, believe in what you’re building, and continue evolving, something that starts with a pair of clippers can turn into a legacy.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. The road hasn’t been smooth at all, but I honestly believe the struggles are a big part of what made me who I am today.

One of my biggest challenges was learning how to transition from just being a talented barber to actually becoming a businessman. Being good with the clippers doesn’t automatically mean you know how to run a business. I had to learn about pricing, managing money, customer service, marketing, branding, scheduling, creating systems, and understanding my value. A lot of those lessons came through trial and error.

I’ve also had to learn how to bet on myself. There were times when I had ideas that other people didn’t understand or couldn’t see yet. Whether it was building the Cuttz By Silk brand, opening my private studio, launching products, starting a radio platform, writing a book, or creating content, I couldn’t always wait for somebody else to believe in the vision before I moved on it.

Social media has been another challenge. At one point, I built my Instagram following to around 66,000 followers and then had my account hacked. Imagine putting years into building a platform and having it taken away. I had a choice: complain about what I lost or rebuild. I chose to rebuild.

There have also been sacrifices people don’t always see the early mornings, long days behind the chair, missing things, investing money back into the business, taking losses, making mistakes, and still having to show up the next day with the same energy for your clients and your family.

But every struggle taught me something. I’ve learned that success isn’t about everything going according to plan. It’s about how you respond when it doesn’t. Every setback forced me to become more disciplined, more creative, and more intentional about the businessman and the man I wanted to become.

That’s why I always say trust the process. Some parts of the process aren’t going to feel good while you’re going through them, but later you’ll understand why you needed them.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Cuttz By Silk is bigger than a haircut it’s a brand built around barbering, entrepreneurship, education, media, and creating an experience.

At the foundation is Cuttz By Silk Studio, my private one-chair barber studio in the Baltimore area. I specialize in precision barbering fades, tapers, transformations, razor finishes, beard grooming, and overall men’s grooming. But what I’m probably most known for is the experience and consistency. When you sit in my chair, my goal isn’t just to give you a great haircut. I want you to feel like you’re receiving a premium service from the moment you walk through the door until you leave.

What separates me is that I’ve never looked at barbering as simply cutting hair. I’ve always looked at the chair as a platform. I’ve been blessed to work with thousands of clients throughout my career, as well as entertainers, athletes, comedians, and television, movie, and magazine productions. But whether you’re a celebrity or someone coming in for your first appointment, you’re going to receive the same level of professionalism and attention to detail.

Another major part of the brand is education. Through my social media content, I don’t mind showing techniques and explaining the process because I want younger barbers to understand that there’s enough room for all of us to be successful. That same philosophy led me to write my book, The Barber’s Bible: Entrepreneur’s Guide to Success. The book isn’t just about cutting hair it’s about building a clientele, branding yourself, customer service, pricing, networking, business systems, ownership, and turning your talent into an actual business.

I’ve also expanded Cuttz By Silk into grooming products and media, including Cuttz By Silk Radio. Radio gives me another platform to have conversations about music, entertainment, sports, local issues, business, and culture while creating opportunities for other people and businesses to have their voices heard.

Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is that Cuttz By Silk actually represents who I am. I didn’t create a character for social media. The same person people see online is the person clients have experienced behind the chair for years. I’ve been able to take something I started doing at 16 years old and build an entire ecosystem around it.

Receiving the 2025 Crown Award for Best Barber in Baltimore was definitely a proud moment, but I’m even more proud that after more than 20 years in this industry, I’m still evolving. I’m still learning, creating, teaching, and finding new ways to expand the brand.

Ultimately, I want readers to understand that Cuttz By Silk isn’t just about what I can do with a pair of clippers. It’s about what you can build when you take your craft seriously.
