Today we’d like to introduce you to Ladonia Spence.
Ladonia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey began long before I ever called myself a chef. It started in my kitchen — cooking for my family, learning how food could comfort, heal, and bring people together.
Over time, I realized food was more than flavor. It was care. It was dignity. It was service.
As I walked through seasons of personal challenges, health awareness, and community needs, I saw how many people were struggling — especially with digestive issues, chronic conditions like acid reflux and Type 2 diabetes, and limited access to nourishing meals. I knew I wanted to be part of the solution.
That’s how Gentle Plates Kitchen was born — a culinary brand focused on structured, intentional meals that support blood sugar balance, digestive calm, and overall wellness. My approach is rooted in whole foods, mineral-dense ingredients, fiber, balanced proteins, and healthy fats — food that truly nourishes the body.
At the same time, my heart for service led me to create A Plate of Compassion, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to feeding and uplifting under-served communities. For me, cooking isn’t just business — it’s ministry.
Today, I’m building digital cookbooks, educational food guides, and community-centered culinary experiences that empower families to take control of their health through practical, delicious meals. Every recipe I create is designed with purpose — no guessing, no random ingredients — just thoughtful nourishment.
My mission is simple:
To make healing food accessible, structured, and full of love.
And I’m just getting started.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road — and I believe that’s part of the growth.
Starting out as a newly published author has been both exciting and humbling. Building something from the ground up takes resilience. There are moments when people clearly understand what I stand for — health, structured nourishment, healing through food — but they still hesitate to invest in their own wellness or purchase the cookbook.
That can be discouraging at times.
You pour your heart into something that you know can truly help people, especially those struggling with digestive issues, blood sugar imbalance, or chronic conditions. And yet, change requires readiness. Not everyone is ready to shift their habits, even when the solution is right in front of them.
I’ve learned that part of leadership is patience.
Every “no” has strengthened my clarity. Every slow season has refined my message. I’ve realized that my assignment isn’t to convince — it’s to educate, to serve, and to remain consistent. The right audience will come when they’re ready.
Building as an independent author and entrepreneur requires faith, endurance, and vision. But I believe deeply in what I’m creating. And that belief keeps me moving forward.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Gentle Plates Kitchen is a wellness-centered culinary brand rooted in structured, whole-food nourishment for individuals navigating chronic health conditions and lifestyle-related diseases.
While many brands focus on one diagnosis, my approach centers on foundational support — stabilizing blood sugar, reducing inflammatory load, supporting digestion, and promoting nutrient density across the board. These principles benefit individuals managing diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune conditions, acid reflux, metabolic disorders, and other chronic challenges.
At Gentle Plates Kitchen, every recipe is intentionally designed. I follow a structured framework that includes fiber for metabolic steadiness, quality protein for cellular repair, and healthy fats to support hormones and nutrient absorption. Nothing is random. Every ingredient serves a purpose.
This isn’t trendy wellness — it’s functional nourishment.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
For me, mentorship hasn’t looked traditional.
My greatest mentor has been Jesus. My faith has guided my decisions, my business, and my mission to serve individuals navigating chronic health challenges. The vision for Gentle Plates Kitchen wasn’t trend-driven — it was placed in my heart through prayer and obedience.
I’ve learned that mentorship doesn’t always mean sitting across from someone with a title. Sometimes it means spiritual discipline, inner conviction, and staying aligned with your calling.
In terms of networking, what has worked best for me is leading with service. I focus on how I can contribute first. Authentic relationships are built through consistency, humility, and clarity of purpose.
When your mission is clear, the right connections align.
