Today we’d like to introduce you to Dmitrii Boikov.
Hi Dmitrii, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Dmitrii, and I moved to the United States about three and a half years ago. Like many people who come here, I was very inspired and impressed by the opportunities, and I really wanted to build something of my own.
My background has always been in construction. Before moving to the U.S., I worked in construction in Russia for about 11 years, and I also had my own construction company there. So when I came here, I decided to stay on the same path, but I knew I had to learn how everything works in America first.
I started very simple. I joined a local construction company and spent about two years learning the codes, the standards, the process, the way people communicate, how projects are managed, and how construction business works here. At the same time, I was improving my English and trying to understand the American system from the inside.
After I gained enough experience, I applied for my Maryland contractor license, passed the exam, and opened my own company, DIXEL Construction Company. At first, I started by myself. I was doing a lot with my own hands, taking small steps, learning, making mistakes, fixing them, and trying to grow the right way. It was not easy, but I think that stage was very important for me.
Later, I met Ruslan. We actually met through volleyball. We played together, became friends, and realized that we had a very similar mindset. He also had a strong construction background and experience working in the industry. After some time, I invited him to join me, and now we have been working together for almost a year.
Today, we are building DIXEL together. We both have a lot of hands-on construction experience, and we are proud of the work we do. We care a lot about details, quality, communication, organization, and financial control. For us, it is very important to finish what we start and to make sure the client feels taken care of during the process.
Most of our clients come to us because they want someone they can trust. They want the project done properly, without chaos, without disappearing contractors, and without feeling like they have to control every little thing themselves. That is the kind of company we are trying to build.
This year, we signed our first full new construction project — building a house from the ground up. For me, that is a big milestone. To go from starting alone to getting our first new home construction contract in about a year and a half is something I am very proud of.
We are still growing, still learning, and still improving every day. But I feel like we are moving in the right direction. Our goal is to keep developing the company, take on bigger and better projects, and help more people improve their homes and their lives.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road.
Honestly, sometimes it still feels like we are not even on a road yet — more like we are pushing through the forest, cutting branches, trying to find the path as we go. But I think that is part of building something from scratch.
When you move to a new country and start a business, especially in construction, everything feels new. You may know America from movies, but living here, working here, building a company here — that is a completely different experience.
The language was one of the biggest challenges for me. I could communicate, but not always the way I wanted to. And in business, especially with clients, communication is everything. You need to explain things clearly, build trust, answer questions, sell your service, and also be honest when something is difficult or expensive. Doing all of that in a second language is not easy.
On top of that, I had to learn the local standards, building codes, permits, inspections, contracts, insurance, marketing, sales, accounting, and how to work with subcontractors here. Even things I already knew from construction in Russia had to be relearned in an American way.
So yes, it has been a huge challenge. And honestly, it still is.
But the most important thing for me is that it is incredibly interesting. It is not easy at all, but it gives me energy. I wake up and feel like I am building something real — not just a company, but a future. Every project teaches us something. Every client, every mistake, every difficult situation helps us become better.
That is what keeps me going: the feeling that we are growing, improving, and building a company that can make people’s lives better through their homes.
As you know, we’re big fans of DIXEL Construction Company. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
DIXEL Construction Company is a general contracting company based in Maryland. We work with homeowners who want to improve, renovate, or completely transform their homes.
In simple words, if something needs to be done in a house, we can probably help with it. It can be a bathroom, a kitchen, a basement, an addition, exterior work, a full home renovation, or even new construction from the ground up.
We are a full-service construction company, so we can help with the whole process — from the first idea and planning to design, permits, construction, inspections, finishing details, and the final result. I sometimes joke that we can take a project from the first sketch all the way to the slippers next to your bed. That is the kind of full-cycle service we want to provide.
What sets us apart is our energy and our attitude toward the work. We really care about what we do. Construction is not just “take a hammer and hit the wall.” It is planning, responsibility, communication, quality control, problem-solving, and respect for the client’s home.
I think many people have had bad experiences with contractors. Someone disappears, someone does not answer the phone, someone gives one price and then everything becomes confusing. We want to build a different kind of construction company — one where the client understands what is happening, where the process is organized, where the communication is clear, and where people feel that their project is in good hands.
We are still a small team, but we are strong in organization, project control, communication, and attention to detail. We also put a lot of effort into growing the business the right way — through better systems, better marketing, better service, and better results for our clients.
What I am most proud of is that we finish what we start. We take responsibility for our work. We do not want to be the cheapest contractor, and we do not try to sell people something they do not need. We want to do honest, high-quality work and make the client happy with the result.
For me, construction is not just about building walls. We create the spaces people later call home — places where families grow, memories happen, children are born, people celebrate, struggle, rest, and live their real lives. That is a big responsibility, and I take it seriously.
At the end of the day, our goal is simple: to help people improve their homes and make the construction process feel less stressful, more transparent, and more human.
