Exploring Life & Business with Tracey Tucker of Bread for Life dba Believe N Bread

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracey Tucker.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My business began with a dream, but it wasn’t my own—it was my niece’s. She asked, “Remember how you used to sell pound cakes after church?” That was a long time ago. I’ve always been a good cook, but baking wasn’t really my specialty. She suggested we focus on bread instead of cake. I told her I needed to pray and think about it because it felt like a big step. After praying and reflecting, I read John 6 to see which words stood out. The words were Believe and Bread, and that’s how we created Believe N Bread. Our outreach is called Bread for Life.

We started in 2019 with a mission to bring our products to small stores like co-ops and local farmers’ markets. Our first breads were ginger, cornbread, and zucchini walnut, and we’ve expanded our offerings based on customer requests. We haven’t yet reached our full vision, which includes hiring women and men from prisons and transitional houses. We also hope to have our own kitchen one day, where we can sell directly and offer customer pickups. Another goal is to teach communities about healthy eating and show that plant-based and vegan foods can taste great.

Our products are plant-based and vegan. We now offer baked goods and side delights. Bread is our main product; our other products include cookie bites, brownies, pies, and cakes. We also offer vegan meatballs, vegan mac & cheese, and salads and soups.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, the journey has not been easy. When I started, I was working a full-time job while building the business. That experience helped me realize what I truly want to do. I have faced challenges like financial struggles and being turned down for grants. Right now, I handle every role in the business. Since I do not drive, we use Uber for transportation. We don’t have a physical store, so our overhead costs are not too high. However, we spend time researching baking supplies to make sure we use quality products. Despite these challenges, it is always rewarding to see our customers smile and chat with us.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
