Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Montgomery.
Hi Keith, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey into design started long before I ever thought of it as a career. Back in the MySpace era, I was just a curious kid experimenting with profile layouts and editing photos for friends and even strangers online. What felt like fun at the time was actually the beginning of a lifelong passion for visual storytelling.
As I got older, I watched other people step into entrepreneurship, and I remember feeling both inspired and frustrated. I wanted to build something of my own, but I didn’t know where to start. I used to say, “Man, I wish someone would just teach me the foundations.” Eventually, I realized I would have to become that person for myself.
At 18, in 2005, I committed to teaching myself graphic design. With nothing but determination, a copy of Photoshop, and a strong work ethic, I started learning everything I could. I would literally set alarms for 1 a.m. just to wake up and practice designing before the day started. I didn’t have formal training, but I had faith, discipline, and a deep belief that my path was being guided for a bigger purpose.
Over time, design became more than a skill — it became a calling. I discovered that what I love most isn’t just making things look good, but helping people bring their vision to life. That passion eventually grew into DesignsbyKeith, a faith-centered branding and design studio serving pastors, ministry leaders, and purpose-driven organizations.
Today, I specialize in building Kingdom-driven brands that combine strategy, clarity, and excellence. I understand the weight leaders carry when they’re serving communities, running ministries, and managing organizations. My role is to come alongside them as a creative partner — helping them communicate clearly, build trust, and expand their impact through intentional branding and design.
Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful for the people who encouraged me, the clients who trusted me, and the faith that carried me when I was figuring things out on my own. Every project I take on is bigger than design — it’s about being a vessel to help others walk boldly in their purpose. And I truly believe the best is still ahead.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To be honest… Not everything is a walk in the park; you’re always going to run into struggles, and I ran into many that taught me valuable lessons in the design industry and personable life lessons. When it comes to clients, you’re either going to get some awesome, easy-going ones that know what they want or some that have high expectations that expect a final design the same day with a snap of a finger. When it comes to situations like that, it taught me how to set realistic time management with my clients and myself. There was a time where I did run into feeling boxed to very specific corporate guidelines and opinions that blocked my creative potential. That taught me to not allow corporate self-interest to take over the potential I have for a project.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
DesignsbyKeith is a faith-centered branding and design studio serving visionary pastors, ministry leaders, and purpose-driven organizations in Baltimore, Washington D.C., and beyond. We specialize in building Kingdom-driven brands that don’t just look excellent — they function strategically to advance mission, expand reach, and create lasting impact.
What we do goes far beyond graphic design. We partner with leaders to develop brand identities rooted in clarity, calling, and community. From visual identity systems and websites to campaign design and brand strategy, every project is approached with intention. Our goal is to help ministries and nonprofits communicate their message with confidence, consistency, and credibility in both digital and physical spaces.
What sets DesignsbyKeith apart is our deep understanding of both ministry and strategy. Many leaders we serve are balancing spiritual leadership with the operational demands of running an organization. We step in as creative partners who not only design but also help translate vision into structure. We understand that a flyer isn’t just a flyer — it’s outreach. A website isn’t just a website — it’s a digital front door. Branding, when done right, becomes a ministry tool.
We are especially known for helping faith-driven leaders move from scattered visuals to cohesive, mission-aligned brands. Our clients often come to us feeling overwhelmed or unsure how to present their vision clearly. Through collaborative strategy and thoughtful design, we help bring alignment between their heart, their message, and how they show up publicly.
Brand-wise, what we’re most proud of is the impact our work has on the communities our clients serve. Seeing a church gain clarity in its messaging, a nonprofit increase engagement, or a leader feel confident sharing their vision — that’s success to us. Our brand is built on service, excellence, and stewardship of the gifts we’ve been given.
What we want readers to know is this: DesignsbyKeith isn’t just a design service — it’s a partnership. We come alongside leaders who are doing meaningful work and help them build brands that reflect the weight and beauty of their calling. Because when purpose and strategy align, impact multiplies — and legacy is built.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
One thing that surprises people is that I’m completely self-taught. There was no formal design school path — just a lot of curiosity, faith, late nights, and determination. I started back in the MySpace era making custom layouts for fun, and what began as experimenting turned into a lifelong calling.
People often see the finished brand work now and assume there was a straight, polished road to get here. In reality, my journey was built during 1 AM design sessions, YouTube tutorials, trial and error, and a deep belief that I was meant to use creativity to serve others. I didn’t just learn design — I learned perseverance, problem-solving, and how to build something from the ground up.
Another thing many don’t realize is how deeply personal my work is to me. I don’t see myself as just a designer for hire — I see myself as a vessel helping bring other people’s visions to life. When a ministry grows, a message reaches more people, or a leader gains confidence in how they present their mission, I feel like I’ve fulfilled my purpose too.
So while people may know the brand, the visuals, and the strategy — what they may not know is that behind it all is a self-taught creative who still approaches every project with the same hunger to learn, serve, and grow.
