Exploring Life & Business with Janay Hurley of Assisted Living Locators of Waldorf and Southern Maryland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janay Hurley.

Hi Janay, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After retiring from the military, I moved into government contracting. Although I valued that experience, I wanted my next chapter to feel more personal and connected to the community. I saw how overwhelmed families could become when trying to find care for an aging loved one. Many did not know where to start, what questions to ask, or how to find a place that felt safe and met their loved one’s needs. That led me to become the owner and senior care advisor for Assisted Living Locators of Waldorf and Southern Maryland. Today, I help families understand their options and make informed decisions at no cost to them. My goal is to make the process less stressful and help families feel heard, supported, and confident about the care their loved one will receive.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a completely smooth road. One of my biggest challenges has been helping more families understand that they do not have to navigate senior living and care decisions alone. Many people still do not know that free guidance is available or where to turn when they need help. I have been working hard to build relationships with trusted community partners who care about serving older adults and their families. I also want to develop stronger connections with case managers, social workers, and other professionals who are often the first people families turn to during a difficult time. I am continuing to grow those relationships, and I am confident in the value I bring. I know trust is built by showing up, listening, staying consistent, and being a dependable resource. My goal is to help families understand their options and feel supported as they make important decisions for someone they love.

As you know, we’re big fans of Assisted Living Locators of Waldorf and Southern Maryland. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I help older adults and their families understand senior living and care options, including assisted living, memory care, independent living, and other support services. I provide this guidance at no cost to families. Families often come to me feeling overwhelmed, unsure where to begin, or worried about making the wrong decision for someone they love. I take time to listen, understand what matters most, and look at the full picture, including care needs, location, budget, and family concerns. I then help families explore options, understand what to look for, and prepare the right questions so they can make informed decisions with more confidence. I am most proud that my business is built on trust, education, and personal support. I want every family I work with to feel heard, respected, and less alone during the process. What I want readers to know is that help is available. You do not have to wait until a crisis to learn about senior care options, and you do not have to figure everything out by yourself.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice is to stay grounded in your purpose and be patient with the process. Starting a business takes more than having a good service. You must consistently show up, build relationships, educate people about what you do, and give them time to understand the value you bring. One thing I wish I had known is how much time it can take to become visible in the community, even when the need for your service is clear. That does not mean you are on the wrong path. It means you have to keep doing the work, stay open to learning, and continue building meaningful connections. In senior care, people remember how you made them feel during a difficult time. Listen carefully, be honest about what you can and cannot do, and follow through on what you promise. Growth matters, but serving people well is what builds a lasting reputation.
