Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey into construction and business ownership did not begin in construction at all — it began in telecommunications, IT support, and eventually IT management. I spent years working in structured corporate environments, learning customer service, communication, problem solving, systems management, and leadership. But my life changed completely after my wife and I were blessed with twins.
Like many parents, we expected challenges, but the reality was overwhelming. Our twins struggled with severe reflux and barely slept, which meant we barely slept either. I made my employer aware during the interview process that I was an active, involved father and that I would always prioritize my children when needed. I still gave my role everything I had. But when one of my children became seriously ill and was hospitalized, despite providing medical documentation, I was ultimately let go shortly afterward.
At the time, I had already begun building MHS Construction independently. After a few more attempts to make traditional employment work, I felt God clearly speaking to me: “Go all in.” I talked to my wife about it, and without hesitation she supported me completely. That decision changed our lives.
What started as a small side business has now grown more than twentyfold into a respected residential and commercial construction company serving Bowie, Upper Marlboro, Hyattsville, and surrounding Maryland and DMV areas. Today, we specialize in bathroom remodeling, kitchen remodeling, basement finishing, whole home renovations, commercial renovations, and custom construction projects of all sizes.
From the beginning, my goal was simple: provide customers with the communication, care, honesty, and attention people value from a more personal company, while building the experience, relationships, staffing, and infrastructure necessary to successfully handle projects of any size.
Over the years, we have been blessed with incredible customers — many clients continued returning to us project after project, some well beyond five separate jobs! Hearing clients say they would never use another contractor is one of the most humbling experiences imaginable and a reminder of how faithful God has been throughout this journey.
I have often said that we are committed to showing excellence in Black ownership, leadership, craftsmanship, and professionalism. We take pride in proving every day that high-level construction services and genuine customer care can exist together.

What once felt like one of the hardest seasons of my life ultimately became the foundation for something greater than I could have imagined. God took what seemed uncertain and turned it into purpose, growth, and opportunity — and for that I will always remain grateful.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a committed husband and father while trying to build a business from the ground up was not easy. There were long nights, difficult decisions, financial pressure, and moments where I questioned everything. I tried to learn something from every single project and carry those lessons into the next one so we could continue improving as a company.
One thing I realized early is that relationships matter. Finding good distributors, suppliers, and partners who genuinely support your growth and want to see you succeed is not easy, but those relationships are critical to building a strong business. The same applies to finding trustworthy, like-minded workers who truly care about fulfilling customer needs and taking pride in their work.
Learning to trust people was difficult for me, but through faith and experience, I have seen God place the right people in my path at the right times. By trusting Him and allowing Him to guide me through every season, challenge, and decision, our company has continued to grow in ways I could have never imagined.

What matters most to you? Why?
My priorities are centered around God, my relationship with Jesus Christ, and my family. My faith is the foundation of everything I do, and I truly believe every opportunity, relationship, and blessing we have experienced has come through God’s guidance and grace. My wife and children are my motivation behind everything, and my business is ultimately about providing for them, building something meaningful, and creating a legacy rooted in leadership, and purpose.
Right behind those priorities are the customers who place their trust in us. We believe people deserve a company that is attentive, honest, responsive, and genuinely focused on their needs throughout the project. We place a strong emphasis on communication, problem solving, and making sure every customer feels their project is being handled with care, professionalism, and full attention from start to finish.
What also matters to me is continued growth — personally, professionally, and spiritually. I believe in constantly improving, building strong relationships, learning from every experience, and surrounding myself with people who share strong values, work ethic, and commitment to excellence.
