Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Johnson.
Hi Derrick, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a U.S. Air Force veteran and the founder of TDM Mold Inspection & Testing Services and the TDM Mold Assistance Foundation. My journey into this industry wasn’t something I initially planned—it came from seeing firsthand how environmental conditions inside homes can directly impact people’s health, finances, and overall quality of life.
Early on, I recognized that many homeowners and tenants were dealing with mold-related issues without clear answers or trustworthy guidance. That motivated me to educate myself, earn certifications, and build a business centered on integrity, accuracy, and helping people understand what’s really happening inside their homes. What started as a small operation has grown into a respected environmental consulting service working with homeowners, property managers, attorneys, and restoration professionals.
Over time, I realized that beyond inspections, there was a deeper need—many families simply can’t afford proper testing or remediation. That led me to launch the TDM Mold Assistance Foundation, a nonprofit focused on helping low-income families, seniors, and vulnerable individuals access mold inspections, remediation support, and temporary housing when needed.
Today, my work sits at the intersection of business and purpose. Through my for-profit company, I provide professional, data-driven environmental assessments. Through my nonprofit, I focus on impact—helping families live in safe, healthy environments.
Everything I do is driven by a simple mission: to protect people, educate communities, and create solutions where others may overlook the problem.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, I started with limited resources and had to build everything from the ground up—learning the technical side of the industry while also figuring out how to run and grow a business at the same time.
One of the biggest challenges has been educating people. Mold and indoor air quality issues are often misunderstood, minimized, or overlooked entirely. I’ve had to spend a lot of time helping clients, property managers, and even other professionals understand the seriousness of these conditions and why proper testing and remediation matter.
There have also been financial challenges, especially in the early stages—investing in equipment, certifications, and marketing without guaranteed returns. Balancing business growth while maintaining quality and integrity has always been a priority, even when it meant turning down opportunities that didn’t align with my standards.
Another challenge has been working with clients who are dealing with stressful or even health-related situations. Many people come to me during difficult times—after water damage, property disputes, or ongoing health concerns. Navigating those situations requires not just technical expertise, but patience, communication, and empathy.
Despite these challenges, each obstacle has helped me grow—both as a business owner and as a person. It’s strengthened my commitment to doing this work the right way and reinforced why I started in the first place: to provide honest answers and help people live in safe, healthy environments.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about TDM Mold Inspection & Testing Services?
TDM Mold Inspection & Testing Services is an environmental consulting company specializing in mold inspections, indoor air quality assessments, moisture intrusion investigations, and post-remediation verification testing. We work with homeowners, tenants, property managers, attorneys, and restoration companies to identify environmental hazards and provide clear, science-based solutions.
What sets us apart is our commitment to independence and accuracy. We focus strictly on inspection and testing—we do not perform remediation—so our findings are unbiased and centered on the client’s best interest. Our approach combines advanced diagnostic tools, including moisture meters, thermal imaging, and laboratory analysis, with a detailed understanding of building science to identify not just visible issues, but the underlying sources of moisture and contamination.
We are known for providing thorough, easy-to-understand reports that help clients make informed decisions. In many cases, our work supports real estate transactions, insurance claims, and legal matters, where accuracy and documentation are critical.
Beyond the business, one of the things I’m most proud of is the creation of the TDM Mold Assistance Foundation. Through this nonprofit, we extend our mission by helping families who cannot afford testing or remediation services, ensuring that access to a safe and healthy living environment isn’t limited by financial barriers.
At our core, we’re not just identifying problems—we’re helping people protect their homes, their health, and their peace of mind.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I believe the mold and indoor air quality industry will see significant growth, driven by increased awareness of how environmental conditions impact health. More homeowners, tenants, and even healthcare professionals are beginning to recognize the connection between indoor environments and respiratory issues, chronic illness, and overall well-being.
One of the biggest shifts will be a move toward prevention rather than reaction. Instead of waiting for visible mold or major water damage, I expect more routine air quality testing, moisture monitoring, and proactive building assessments—similar to how people approach general health checkups today.
We’re also seeing advancements in technology that will continue to shape the industry. Improved diagnostic tools, real-time air monitoring, and more precise laboratory analysis will allow for faster and more accurate identification of environmental issues. At the same time, data-driven reporting and documentation will become increasingly important, especially in real estate transactions, insurance claims, and legal cases.
Another major trend is increased regulation and standardization. As awareness grows, I anticipate stricter guidelines around indoor air quality, particularly in rental properties, schools, and healthcare facilities. This will place greater emphasis on qualified inspectors and properly documented assessments.
Overall, the industry is moving toward a more professional, science-based approach. Companies that prioritize accuracy, transparency, and education will stand out, while those cutting corners will have a harder time keeping up.
