Daily Inspiration: Meet Thrace Sherman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thrace Sherman.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hello! My name is Thrace and I am an artist that specializes in many forms of mediums from acrylic painting to enamel pins. Since elementary school I’ve been using artistry as an outlet, and it wasn’t until I joined a club called Destination Imagination where I realized my passion for artistry runs deeper than i thought. Through this I painted scenery for our presentations that led to me creating paintings on the side and eventually selling them at Balticon Science Fiction Convention. Through my family indulging in my interests and buying any canvas and acrylic paint my heart desires, I’ve been able to take it to a next level and push my creativity to its limits. I enjoy creating sea themed paintings and pins and If you couldn’t tell I own more blue paint than I know what to do with. I recently started creating enamel pins for the original club that got me so into artistry, as pin trading is huge in the community and managed to create a set of 3 sharks. I am excited to see what mediums and art I can create for the future!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Growing up I was told that art is more of a hobby, and the STEM programs I was in school tried their best to keep artistry as an afterthought. It wasnt until college where I took my first ever actual art class and I realized that my career needs to have some form of artistry or creativity in it or I might go insane. I settled on majoring in UX/UI Design and continuing to create artwork and paintings in my freetime.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I mostly create acrylic paintings consisting of sea/water themes, as blue is my favorite color to work with and I find painting water to be theraputic. You can also find sea themes in the enamel pins that I create, as I created a set of sharks with an abstract take to it. My favorite work would be a whale painting I made around 2 years ago, It took around 12 hours to make and its become a staple in my portfolio. I create one of a kind pieces and generally dont like creating the same piece twice unless upon special request. I make paintings of all sizes, and may venture into oil and oil pastels if I get over my fear of them. I like to put my own artistic spin on real life, and tend to take inspiration from videos/photos from nature.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Unfortunately the AI takeover seems to be in full swing, while I am harshly against AI, its no doubt it will be incorporated into the art world, whether to enhance or mimic real art. Im honestly hoping the AI bubble will pop so that things can be back to normal, call me old school but I enjoy art from real people not machines. Im hoping User Experience and Interface Design will take off in the digital work career wise, as its what Im studying at the University of Maryland.
For my own business I hope to create artwork for more shows and continue creating pins for the non-profit Destination Imagination that I volunteer for.
