Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Smith.
Hi Steven, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started making music in High school. Around 2015. I was really into playing football and went to a really good sports oriented school, but I wasn’t really a huge fan of studying and homework. I was looking for a way to fill my time after the football season ended and I found a software called Audio Sauna that allowed me to make these melodic loops and beats. I started out making 10 to 15 second loops, and I fell deeper and deeper in love with the sounds and process of creating them as time went on. I eventually moved on to more sophisticated software like FL Studios and Ableton Live. This all led to me attending Towson University and studying there with a focus in audio production.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No. To be honest it’s still a challenge every day. I think the main struggle is staying consistent in my efforts even if the outcome is uncertain. In the world of music, as I’m seeing, so much of the perceived value of a work, or moment, or era, or even a person; is decided after the fact. This means that almost all of the work has to come from a place of intention, trusting the process, and self belief.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I make music as an artist and producer under the name Dsembr. I’ve produced music for and with some amazing people in the area. I also write, and perform my own songs. My music currently lives in the worlds of indie, alternative, and psychedelic RnB. It is rooted in the hope-filled philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism – which at its core is a belief in the limitless potential of each person. With themes of self-reflection, karma, time, and human desire, my aim through the music is to paint a nostalgic yet uniquely joyful picture of the human experience.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite memory from childhood is Christmas Eve. The fireplace burning, the Christmas lights hung around the living room, all different. The movies and shows we watched. The anticipation of what was in the gifts I received. The safety and warmth I felt being around those closest to me.
