Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Quander.
Hi Julian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m Julian Quander, a singer, songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur from the Washington, D.C. area. Music has been a major part of my life from an early age. I studied voice at Montgomery College and Towson University and competed in both jazz and classical music, including winning first place in the Cab Calloway Jazz Vocal Competition twice and the N.A.T.S. Classical Voice Competition.
A major turning point in my journey was moving to China, where I ultimately spent about 15 years building my career as a professional entertainer. I started performing full-time and eventually worked throughout the country, including several years in Shanghai and more than a decade in Xiamen. During that time, I performed for major international brands and events and had opportunities connected with companies like Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Nike, Adidas, Jordan Brand and the NBA. That experience taught me not only how to perform, but how to connect with audiences across cultures.
In 2025, I returned to the United States with the goal of taking everything I had learned overseas and building the next chapter of my career here. I founded JQ Nation LLC as the platform for my music, entertainment, and creative projects, with a larger vision of bridging Eastern and Western cultures through entertainment.
Since returning, things have moved quickly. My single “Life of the Party” reached #77 on the U.S. iTunes chart, my music has received awards recognition, and I’ve continued expanding my live performances and releasing original music, including “We Don’t Stop.” I’ve also developed an animated series called Universe Is Yours, which has grown to more than 150 episodes.
Today, I see myself as more than just an artist. I’m building a creative company around music, entertainment, storytelling, and international collaboration. After spending so many years building a career overseas and essentially starting a new chapter when I returned home, my story has really become about taking everything I’ve learned, betting on myself, and building something that can reach people globally.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was building a successful career overseas and then making the decision to essentially start over when I returned to the United States after nearly 15 years in China. I had experience, relationships, and a reputation there, but much of that didn’t automatically translate into opportunities back home.
Being an independent artist has also meant learning how to wear many hats. I’m not only creating and performing music—I’ve had to understand marketing, branding, business, promotion, budgeting, and how to build the right team around me. A lot of what I’ve accomplished has been self-funded, so every decision matters.
There have been disappointments, financial challenges, opportunities that didn’t work out, and plenty of moments where I’ve had to adjust my strategy. But those experiences taught me resilience. I’ve learned that success isn’t always about having a perfect path; sometimes it’s about being willing to reinvent yourself, stay consistent, and keep moving when the path changes.
Coming back to America and rebuilding has probably been one of my greatest challenges, but it has also become one of the most exciting parts of my story.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer, songwriter, producer, performer, and entrepreneur. My work is rooted in Pop, R&B, Soul, and Funk, but what I really specialize in is creating experiences. Whether I’m performing for an intimate audience or a large event, I want people to feel like they were part of the show rather than simply watching it.
I spent nearly 15 years performing professionally in China, which gave me the opportunity to entertain audiences from all over the world and work on events involving major international brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Nike, Adidas, Jordan Brand, and the NBA. Today, I’m bringing that international experience back to the United States while building my own entertainment company, JQ Nation LLC.
I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve been able to reinvent myself. I returned to the U.S. in 2025 and essentially had to rebuild my career in a market where many people didn’t know what I had accomplished overseas. In a relatively short period of time, my single “Life of the Party” reached #77 on the U.S. iTunes chart, my music has received award recognition, and I’ve continued expanding as both an artist and entrepreneur.
What sets me apart is the combination of artistry, entrepreneurship, and international perspective. I’ve built a career on both sides of the world, and I understand firsthand that music can communicate beyond language and culture. That experience is at the heart of what I’m building with JQ Nation: entertainment that brings people together and helps bridge East and West.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that you can’t wait for someone else to validate your vision. At some point, you have to believe in yourself enough to build it yourself.
My journey has taken me from Washington, D.C., to spending nearly 15 years building a career in China, and then back to the United States where I essentially had to introduce myself all over again. That taught me that past success doesn’t guarantee future opportunities. You have to be willing to adapt, remain a student, and prove yourself again.
I’ve also learned that rejection and setbacks aren’t necessarily signs that you’re going in the wrong direction. Sometimes they force you to become more creative, more disciplined, and more independent.
