Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Svn.
Hi Jay, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Peace! My name is Jay Svn, and I’m an entrepreneur and artist. I co-own two businesses—‘Blak Kami” and “Route 410 Transports’—and I also pursue music. I started making music around age 12 but truly began to focus on it about three years ago. Currently, I’m a student at Pendulum Ink, a Hip Hop school founded by industry veterans Mickey Factz and Chilla Jones. I entered the business world just before COVID, inspired by Nipsey Hussle’s lessons on independence and profit—realizing I need to earn from my efforts rather than let others take the majority of the gains. Entrepreneurship has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. It’s not just about learning different aspects of business; it’s about discovering more about myself along the way.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all!! The struggles I’ve encountered have helped me understand what I need to learn about business. It helped me know what bases I need to cover and also helped me understand the type of people I need to do business with because business isn’t for everybody or how some people do business may not align with other business practices..
Music has taught me to find an audience and find a way for you to market yourself and your music to said audience. It’s a hassle but once you find that lane it’ll make things easier
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Professionally, I work in IT. In my personal life, I’m building 2 businesses while also pursuing my passion for music. Most people who know me know me for either my clothing brand “Blak Kami” or my music. I don’t specialize in anything in particular because I love learning new things, but if I had to pick one, it would be music, since I’ve done it the longest. The thing I’m most proud of is my children. Being able to watch them grow up and be there every step of the way is what makes me proud.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Anything can happen, honestly. With AI on the horizon, many things we consider normal are likely to change, but we can overcome that by preparing and learning it ourselves. I see music gradually shifting toward a more independent approach, and I love it because we’ve lost touch with the true essence of music and it’s just become a tool for corporations to secure funding. I miss the times when you could hear passion in the music or enjoy a variety of styles on the radio. I grew up in an era where you could put a blank tape in the stereo, record, and end up with a fire mixtape. You can’t really do that anymore, but I hope we see a return to those simpler, more authentic times soon..
