Daily Inspiration: Meet Christopher Myers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Myers.

Hi christopher, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in baltimore. My grandfather was a photographer so I grew up with a lot of black and white prints and film around the house. When I got to high school I took a few classes and it was hooked. Then I went to the Maryland Institute College of Art and graduated with a bfa. After college I worked at a dark room for 5 years then open my own dark room business. When digital photography came on board my business plummeted so I began shooting for a weekly alternative newspaper called the citypaper. I got well acquainted with everything that made Baltimore tick. I also had a bunch of exhibitions at museums and a high-end gallery on the Main Street in baltimore. Now I do a lot of commercial photography for hospitals colleges design firms and ad agencies while also trying constantly to create art for myself.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
it was hard to get the very first shooting job. Then came the recession of 2008-2009. my biz almost fell apart. i could not just wait for work so i made my own stories and pitch them to magazines to keep things going. Covid, i didnt work for like 6 months but it is fine now

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
For business I specialize in unique editorial portraits. I usually shoot workers like construction people artists and the surgeons. I like to light them very heavily and take them to a new hire bespoked look. Artistically for myself I like to do black and white street photography and large composite posters that I hang throughout the city. I’m actually most proud of a show that I will be included in this october. The Baltimore Museum of Art is doing a retrospect of all photography in Baltimore from 1842 to present. I have a piece in the show. I think what sets me apart from others is that I went to an art school not a school to become a commercial photographer. So I tend to use odd lens choices or handmade lenses and at an art school they didn’t teach you how to light scenes like a commercial photographer. I think more I like things by feel and more sculpturally

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
work ethic. over delivering. doing what the client needs but giving extra that is just my vision and sometimes they go with my thoughts
