Daily Inspiration: Meet Ashley Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Hill.

Hi Ashley , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After I graduated with my Masters in Human Resources Development from Clemson University, I moved back to my hometown, Fort Washington, Maryland. I was interviewing for jobs, but the pandemic really made it tough—there just weren’t many opportunities. So, I leaned into my creativity. Art has always a comfort for me, and with the guidance of my second mom, Vernita, who gave me her recipes, I adapted them, made them my own, and from there I honed the craft, built a brand, and I kept perfecting my craft. Word spread in the community, and before I knew it, I was getting requests for all kinds of events—birthdays, weddings, and corporate gatherings.

Now, L A Custom Cakes has grew into a thriving business, serving the DC, Maryland and Virginia area and is known for our personalized, detailed designs, and it’s been an incredible journey building this business from the ground up.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, the journey of entrepreneurship has not been an easy one. Early on, I struggled with the financial side, especially when orders were inconsistent. I had to be really resourceful, investing in supplies, learning about business finances, and slowly building a loyal customer base. Every challenge I learned from and it pushed me to be more creative and resilient, and it’s really shaped where I am today.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in a variety of custom cakes, whether it’s a themed cake design or 3D cake design, we can create it.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future is to branch out and expanding LA Custom Cakes by teaching classes for all ages—whether it’s kids, adults, or beginners who just want to learn the craft and having my own cake studio to host event and classes. I’m really excited to share my techniques and help others build their own skills—so that’s a big step I’m planning for next.
