Today we’d like to introduce you to Pete Kuhn.
Hi Pete, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been playing music most of my life. 20 years ago I bought an acoustic piano for my daughter so that she could start piano lessons. We had to get it tuned periodically. During the 1st tuning of the piano I was mesmerized watching while the piano tuner went through all the octaves setting the proper pitch of each note. It took a little over an hour for him to go through all 230 strings pulling them into pitch and setting the tone. When the tuning was complete I decided this is something I would love to do. I enrolled at the American School of Piano Tuning in a 10 month piano tuning and repair course where I learned perfect technique for tuning and repairing pianos. Throughout my 15 year career I have tuned over 2000 pianos and enjoying every minute of it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The only obstacles I encountered has been finding customers. I created a website, advertised in several places then sat back and waited for the phone calls. Today I would say 30% of my business comes from referrals. 60% repeating customers. 10% new customers.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What I am most proud of is over the years watching the young kids that start playing the piano and mature into excellent musicians. I had a hand in that by keeping their piano in perfect pitch. I am a musician myself so I know to be able to play well your instrument must be in tip top shape and tuned properly especially as a new beginner.
