Conversations with Justin Mukasa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Mukasa.

Hi Justin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been intrigued with Hip-Hop production growing up, getting acquainted with the likes of RZA, Kanye, 9th Wonder and The Neptunes as a kid. It wasn’t until high school when I actually started having thoughts of wanting to try beatmaking when I discovered folks like Madlib, MF DOOM, Dilla & Pete Rock. Funny enough, I didn’t really act on it until a few years later in college, and slowly but gradually just developed the confidence to put myself & my work out there, as well as create consistently.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth journey at all, but the beauty of it all is to enjoy the process throughout it. It has taught me a lot about myself and how I interact with the world, the necessary discipline to accomplish goals you set out for yourself and how to continue refining when you haven’t quite met your expectations yet. I’d say one of my biggest struggles at times is deciding who to send beats to, especially when you’re highly confident in your work and have multiple people in mind.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a music producer, I make mostly sample-based productions but also original melodies as well ranging from Hip-Hop, R&B, Jazz, Gospel, Soul and many more genres. I put out my own music in the form of beat tapes & instrumental albums, compilation projects with artists featured over my production and fully produced collaboration projects with other artists.
I would say my ear for samples and my production style sets me apart from others. I won’t say my signature is necessarily uncommon, but I think the way my production strives to create an atmosphere for artists to really express their innermost thoughts is a strong point of mine.

Any big plans?
Putting out more compilation projects and more collab work with other artists, I have a few in the works. Mostly artists I’ve worked with frequently already such as Tre Isaacs, Shane the Shaman, Gxldsoulrebel & Tylisha Haskins. Got some work in store with my guys Mani2x & Illohim as well which I’m excited about. And definitely getting my name and work out much more, more placements & collabs with fellow underground artists.
