Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Looking and feeling like the best version of myself has always been important to me. I remember getting my hair done as a little girl, then running to the bathroom to put my personal touches on it. My sister always did a great job, but I didn’t feel confident until I made the adjustments I felt necessary, yet couldn’t quite put into words. As I got older I realized the hairstyles that make me feel confident, also protect my hair, are low maintenance, and provide long term results I can count on. I didn’t have the time to spend an hour doing my hair every morning, I needed to be well rested for school. That led me to doing tons of research, becoming my own test subject, and before you knew it, I was a walking billboard for glueless closure installs.
I wanted to feel good about my appearance because that made me a better student, I could focus on the lesson instead of wondering if people notice I’m having a bad hair day. I had no idea finding and wearing this low maintenance, protective style would attract women who wanted similar results. I’d be working retail and women would stop me, asking me to share my hairstylist’s information, and the next thing you know I had built a clientele.
I loved helping women unlock the confidence they had lost because they didn’t know the best hairstyle options to fit their busy lifestyles, or they just didn’t have a hairstylist who provided consistent results. I quickly learned a big part of providing consistent results is using consistent, quality extensions. One day, I had enough. I couldn’t see women be taken advantage of when buying hair extensions anymore. My clients were being sold “virgin” hair that wouldn’t hold a curl, tangled, and wouldn’t last more than a 3 weeks. I spent years finding and testing virgin hair extensions, and finally sourced virgin hair with consistent quality, lasts 4 years, and holds beautiful curls, so my clients spend less time getting ready every day. Shortly after, I traveled overseas to meet my supplier in person and oversee production for the Blessed Be The Mane hair collection.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been fun and rewarding, but not exactly smooth. One of the biggest struggles was making the decision to change career paths in my junior year of college. My Nigerian parents wanted me to be a lawyer or doctor. How was I going to tell them “I want to be a hairstylist”? Nevertheless, I earned my degree, went to cosmetology school, and my parents were supportive. It didn’t take any convincing and I’m glad I followed my heart because I’ve met and helped so many amazing women.
Another struggle has been accepting I can’t help everyone. Focusing on busy women who value natural looking lace closure installs, convenience, and reliability has helped me be of even better service to them. I’ve been able to create systems for them, tailor glueless closure services to them, and provide them with quality hair extensions so they feel good about how they look, while reducing the time they spend getting ready every morning
