Today we’d like to introduce you to Zhanna Hountz.
Hi Zhanna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It began after my husband Larry Hountz suffered a traumatic brain injury in a rear end car collision in 2011. He worked as IT Security consultant and after the accident he lost his ability to perform at his previous employment. During his recovery we were looking for the therapies that would motivate my husband and give him a reason to look forward to a new day. After Larry painted a few canvases, he said that he wanted to grow plants. And the seeds were planted… We started researching and imagining how to grow plants without leaving the city, not using soil and what would be a source of light. So, we end up developing a process that shaped the mission focused on reducing carbon footprint, single use plastics, food safety, and nutritionally potent pesticide, fertilizer free, 100% bioavailable pure microgreens grown on top of a coconut fiber pad.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The more we grew microgreens the more we understood nutritional health benefits of our microgreens. People were reaching out from all over the world finding us through social media. Realization that one small company can’t grow enough microgreens to make it available to the consumer without losing the sustainable nature of the business.
While supplying local restaurants with living microgreens, focus shifted to developing user-friendly, cost-efficient City Hydro System with the training program. We created partnerships with USA based businesses along with overseas partners for the City Hydro System components.
People were interested in growing microgreens for themselves and their families for health benefits, starting to supplement income selling microgreens or having a full-time business.
