Today we’d like to introduce you to Ta’Jah Fleming.
Hi Ta’Jah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
A lot has changed since I first shared my story with Voyage, but I think the biggest change has been understanding the deeper meaning behind work I had already been doing for years.
My path has never been perfectly straight, but hair has always been the constant because it has always been my passion . Even through different careers, motherhood and different seasons of my life, I continued doing hair and serving people because it was something I genuinely loved. For a long time, I was so focused on showing up and doing the work that I never really stopped to look at everything I had built or what it represented.
That started to change during my own healing journey. As I began looking at myself and my life differently, I started looking at TF The Hair Loft differently too. I realized that so much of what I had created was connected to helping people move forward from wherever they were starting. In many ways, I had been creating that experience for other people while learning how to do the same for myself.
That realization made me more curious about the things I had been observing behind the chair for years. Experience had taught me a lot, but I wanted to understand more of the “why.” I continued my education, became a Hair Loss Practitioner, earned my Senior Cosmetology license and became a Trichologist. My previous work as an EMT and in healthcare began to make sense differently too. It taught me how to listen, observe and understand that what you see on the surface is not always the entire story.
That evolution eventually led to Thriving Follicles™. Even the logo has meaning for me. It combines a hair follicle with a lotus flower because a lotus can grow through difficult conditions and still rise and bloom. That symbolism reflects the work, but it also reflects parts of my own journey.
As my understanding of the work became clearer, I also began seeing the business differently. I stopped looking at it only through the lens of the work I performed every day and started recognizing the responsibility that comes with building something that has the potential to grow beyond where it began. That shift has made me much more thoughtful about the decisions I make and the kind of company I want to continue building.
I am grateful that I did not have everything figured out from the beginning. Some things only became clear because I kept showing up long enough to understand them.
I have always done the work. Now I understand more clearly what I was building while I was doing it. Hair has been the constant throughout my life, and somehow, after all these years, it is still leading me toward my next destination.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges throughout my career has been realizing how much there is to learn beyond the craft itself. Cosmetology can teach you how to perform a service, but building a sustainable career requires an entirely different education.
I had to grow into understanding business, pricing, financial literacy, leadership, boundaries and the responsibility that comes with making decisions for a company instead of only thinking about the appointment in front of me. A lot of that knowledge came through experience, mistakes and being willing to admit when there was something I still needed to learn.
I also built without unlimited resources, and that taught me patience and resourcefulness. There have been times when I could clearly see where I wanted to go but had to accept that the timing was not right yet. Earlier in my journey, I probably would have viewed that as falling behind. Today, I understand that growth is not always about moving faster or becoming bigger. Sometimes growth means strengthening what you already have.
Building while being a mother has shaped that perspective as well. Business does not exist separately from real life. There have been seasons when I had to adjust a plan, change a timeline or make the decision that was sustainable rather than the one that looked the most impressive from the outside.
I have also become much more aware of longevity. Beauty is a physical profession, and being busy is not necessarily the same thing as building something that can support you over a lifetime. That realization changed the way I think about success.
Looking back, I am grateful for those lessons. I would not choose every difficult moment again, but I understand what they taught me. They forced me to become a student of more than hair and helped me become much more thoughtful about the decisions I make today.
At this stage, I am less concerned with how growth looks from the outside. I care much more about whether what I am building is strong enough to last.

TF The Hair Loft has evolved into a wellness-centered hair care studio where beauty, healthy hair practices, education and the client experience all work together.
At the center of that is The TF Method™. While the full methodology is proprietary, the philosophy behind it is simple: the foundation matters. Before deciding where the hair is going, you have to understand where it is starting. That perspective has shaped the way I approach the work and the experience I want clients to have.
It also connects to our message, “Every Strand Has a Story. We Bring Yours to Life.”™ Hair has history, and people do too. Every client comes with different experiences, habits, concerns and goals. I do not believe those differences should be ignored or treated with a one-size-fits-all approach. Understanding the story matters.
Since my first Voyage feature, the business has also expanded with the development of Thriving Follicles™, the hair and scalp wellness division of TF The Hair Loft. While TF The Hair Loft remains rooted in beauty, healthy hair care and styling, Thriving Follicles™ creates a more specialized space for clients navigating hair loss, thinning and scalp concerns. It allows me to bring my education in trichology and hair loss into the work while continuing to emphasize education, wellness and individualized support.
For me, the two brands are connected, but they serve different purposes. TF The Hair Loft focuses on the salon experience and healthy hair care, while Thriving Follicles™ allows me to approach hair and scalp wellness through a deeper lens. Together, they allow me to meet people at different points in their hair journey without expecting every client or concern to fit into the same type of service.
I am proud of how both brands have developed because neither was created simply to follow what was popular at the moment. Their evolution came from years of experience, continuing my education and paying attention to the needs and conversations that continued to surface through my work.
Today, I am focused on making sure both brands continue to reflect the same level of care, education and attention that shaped the work from the beginning.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
If I could give another business owner anything, it would be the lessons I had to learn by actually doing the work.
Learn your numbers early. Talent can get people through the door, but you still have to understand what it costs to run the business, what you are earning and whether the decisions you are making are sustainable. You cannot make strong decisions with numbers you do not know.
Learn when to ask for help too. Business ownership can make you feel like you are supposed to know everything, but you are not. Sometimes growth means recognizing that you need guidance, another professional, additional support or simply someone who understands an area better than you do.
And pay attention to yourself while you are building. Burnout can make you lose the love for something you once prayed for. Know when you need rest. Know when you need support. Know when you need to step away long enough to come back clear. Taking care of yourself is not separate from taking care of the business.
At the same time, do it scared. There are going to be decisions you may never feel completely ready for. Sometimes you might have to cry, yell, regroup and then do it anyway. I live by the belief that we do not quit, we pivot. If one route stops making sense, learn what it taught you, adjust and find another way forward.
Consistency is what carries all of it. I believe in giving 100 percent, and on the days when I simply do not feel like it, that is when I challenge myself to give 120 percent. I have also learned the difference between not feeling like doing something and genuinely needing rest. Consistency does not mean ignoring your limits or working yourself into the ground. It means not allowing fear, frustration or one difficult day to lower the standard you have set for yourself.
And always build with the future in mind. Do not wait until your business becomes bigger to start treating it like something important. Learn now. Prepare now. Create the standard now. Take what you are building seriously before anyone else has a reason to.
You do not have to know exactly how the story ends. You just have to be willing to keep learning, keep adjusting and keep building.
Do it scared. Stay consistent. Know your business. And if the plan changes, pivot,but don’t quit.
