Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Turnbull.
Hi Lindsey, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Pre-pandemic, I randomly applied for, and was chosen for, a once-in-a-lifetime, all-woman, citizen science sailing mission. On that trip, which took place months before the world locked down, I worked with 11 amazing women to collect ocean water samples to be sent for microplastics testing and counting.
While I’ve always been a bit of a tree-hugger and animal lover, that trip truly opened my eyes to the broad scale of plastic pollution on the planet. I learned how profound and completely we have essentially poisoned ourselves and all life on this planet since single-use plastics became the norm JUST since the 1950s.
In doing more research, I discovered (but shouldn’t have been shocked to find out) that petrochemical companies knowingly lied about the feasibility of recycling in order to pacify the public, rather than face any kind of responsibility for the amount of waste they create and sell.
In 2023, I started my plastic-free and refillery business, From Here to Home Essentials. I wanted to make plastic-free swaps accessible, affordable, and *easy,* because people will do what is convienient at the end of the day. My business is run out of my home, occasionally at markets and pop-ups, but primarily, I deliver refills in re-used jars (that I collect, clean, and reuse). Very little goes to waste.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Oh, no, absolutely not. My struggles along the way have been more of the personal variety- my boyfriend of a decade passed away in 2024 after a pretty rough go of cancer treatment. In January 2026, my best friend passed away completely unexpectedly. Of course, with loss like that, it’s inevitable that will affect every part of your life.
I spent most of 2024 and quite a bit of 2025 in a bit of a daze. I was not able to put my whole self and effort into From Here to Home Essentials. Of course, people were very supportive and understanding!
More recently, tariffs have been a struggle. Bamboo products are manufactured overseas. We don’t manufacture them in America- we don’t have the infrastructure for it. Ordering bamboo products carries additional risk- like, will I get a surprise bill?
Overall, people are generally excited to participate in refilling, but since it’s a new concept for a lot of people, there’s a bit of education. I do offer delivery to make it easier for people, but it’s still not as easy as “add to cart” or “grab a random bottle at the store,” so I do a lot of education about the harms of plastic pollution, the consolidation of grocery store brands, and why going plastic-free is better.
We’ve been impressed with From Here to Home Essentials, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Just in 2026, From Here to Home Essentials has replaced over 100 plastic bottles, tubs, and packaging through refills and plastic free swaps. While this may not seem like a HUGE amount, any one would certainly notice 100 extra empty bottles in their home. Each sale equals one less bottle being thrown into the recycling bin (where 91% of plastic is not actually ever recycled) or the garbage can. Each sale keeps money out of the hands of oil and plastic companies, which I can only consider a net positive.
I am proud of steady growth of From Here to Home Essentials, and I am proud to offer free local delivery, to attend pop-ups in my community, and to generally make life less trashy for my neighbors!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m not sure if it’s surprising, but I’m a huge fan of extreme metal- death metal, grindcore, powerviolence, black metal, thrash, etc. I even work on a heavy metal cruise every year!
