Hi Joanne, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My love for design began long before I realized it could become a career. I’ve always been fascinated by how thoughtfully designed spaces can influence the way people feel, live, and connect. That curiosity eventually led me to study interior design at both the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and Montgomery College in Maryland, where I built the technical foundation for what would become a lifelong profession.
Over the past three decades, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of residential and commercial projects, gaining experience with several design firms before launching Joanne Rodriguez Interior Design in 2012. Starting my own firm gave me the freedom to create a more personal, collaborative experience for my clients and to oversee every aspect of a project—from the initial concept and space planning to procurement, construction coordination, and the final installation.
What has kept me passionate after all these years is that no two projects—or clients—are ever the same. Every home tells a different story, and I love discovering how to create spaces that are not only beautiful, but also deeply functional and reflective of the people who live there. My goal has never been to chase trends; it’s to design timeless interiors that enrich my clients’ daily lives and continue to bring them joy for years to come.
Beyond my work with clients, I’m passionate about giving back to the design community through mentorship and professional organizations. Supporting the next generation of designers has become one of the most rewarding parts of my career, and it continually reminds me why I fell in love with this profession in the first place. Even after nearly 30 years, I still consider myself a student of design, always learning, evolving, and finding inspiration in the people and projects that come my way.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most entrepreneurs, my journey has been incredibly rewarding, but it certainly hasn’t been without challenges. Building a business requires wearing many hats. As designers, we’re not only responsible for creating beautiful spaces—we also become project managers, educators, problem-solvers, financial planners, counselors, and—if I’m being honest—a little bit psychic. Much of my job is anticipating challenges before they happen, thinking several steps ahead, and solving problems before my clients ever have to worry about them.
Another part of my role is helping clients navigate difficult conversations. Sometimes that means explaining that a wish list doesn’t align with the realities of the project, whether it’s the budget, timeline, or existing conditions within the home. Those conversations aren’t always easy, but they’re essential. I believe clients deserve honesty, realistic expectations, and thoughtful guidance so they can make informed decisions and ultimately achieve the best possible outcome.
The design industry is constantly evolving. New products, technologies, building practices, and client expectations mean that continuing education isn’t optional—it’s essential. I’ve embraced that challenge by remaining curious and committed to learning throughout my career. I truly believe that every project teaches me something new.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change the challenges I’ve faced because they’ve shaped the way I approach my work today. They’ve made me a better designer, a stronger business owner, and a more compassionate advocate for my clients. Every obstacle has reinforced my belief that thoughtful planning, clear communication, and perseverance are just as important as great design.

I often joke that interior designers have to be a little bit psychic because we’re constantly anticipating challenges before they happen. Much of my work happens behind the scenes, solving problems my clients never have to experience because we’ve already planned for them.
I’m especially proud of the relationships I’ve built over the years. Much of my business comes through referrals and repeat clients, which I consider one of the greatest compliments I can receive. It tells me that I’ve earned their trust—not only through beautiful results, but through honesty, clear communication, attention to detail, and a genuine commitment to making the entire design experience enjoyable.
After nearly 30 years in the industry, I still approach every project with the same curiosity and excitement that first drew me to design. My hope is that when my clients walk into a space we’ve created together, they don’t just see a beautiful room—they feel completely at home.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Beautiful interiors are certainly important, but what truly motivates me is knowing that I’ve created a home that supports the way my clients live, gather, celebrate, and make memories with the people they love. Great design isn’t just about how a space looks—it’s about how it feels and how it functions every single day.
Relationships are equally important to me. Whether I’m working with clients, contractors, vendors, or mentoring aspiring designers, I believe trust, kindness, and clear communication are the foundation of every successful partnership. Some of the most rewarding moments in my career have come from the relationships I’ve built over the years, many of which have grown into lasting friendships.
I’m also passionate about continuing to learn and giving back to the design community. This profession is constantly evolving, and I believe there’s always something new to discover. At the same time, I feel a responsibility to encourage and mentor the next generation of designers, just as others generously invested in me throughout my own journey.
At the end of the day, I hope people remember me not only for the spaces I’ve designed, but for the way I made them feel throughout the process—with honesty, compassion, professionalism, and genuine care. If I’ve helped someone love where they live and made what can be a stressful renovation feel exciting and manageable, then I’ve done my job well.
