Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazlyn Sligh.
Hi Jazlyn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up in Frederick, Maryland, music and community were built into my life from the very beginning. My parents brought a rich musical background with them from Philadelphia and established a music ministry called Treasures of the Heart Worship Center. Being surrounded by a diverse community united by music laid the foundation for everything I do today.
While studying at Towson University, I expanded my creative horizons into modeling and the beauty industry, while also gaining valuable experience working in the campus career center. Connecting people with opportunities sparked the idea for a music industry networking platform—originally envisioned as the Sound Lounge Café—to help creatives bridge the gap between passion and profession.
After graduating, I officially launched that vision into a professional development and event business designed to elevate and support artists. Today, as a singer-songwriter, my own music blends elements of R&B, country, and gospel to inspire and empower others. Alongside writing and performing, I host open mics and community events throughout Frederick, Maryland, with a long-term goal of expanding this platform globally to uplift creatives everywhere.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely been a rocky road, but I wouldn’t trade any of it.
Growing up, one of my biggest challenges was battling self-doubt—often feeling like I wasn’t good enough or smart enough in school. Learning to overcome those feelings meant constantly fighting to believe in myself, and music became my outlet to process those emotions and empower myself. Every obstacle I faced taught me something valuable, and I’m genuinely grateful for the path God led me through because it gave me resilience, wisdom, and a much deeper perspective on life.
Navigating the ups and downs of entrepreneurship comes with its own steep learning curve. When things get difficult, I lean on my faith, prioritize self-care, and make a conscious choice to offer myself grace. Through prayer and holding onto my purpose, I’ve learned that every challenge is just preparation for the next stage of growth.
We’ve been impressed with Sound Lounge Collective , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Sound Collective is a music industry and creative-led organization dedicated to empowering entrepreneur-minded independent artists. We specialize in live events, interactive workshops, and comprehensive artist development that helps musicians navigate both the creative and business sides of their careers.
What sets us apart is the approachable, high-value environment we create. We named our signature space the Sound Lounge because we wanted it to feel as comfortable and welcoming as walking into a living room and relaxing on the couch. In our space, the typical industry barriers dissolve—an emerging artist can sit directly next to a Grammy Award-winning songwriter in a casual workshop, learn from them, and build real, genuine connections.
I founded this organization out of a personal need. As an independent artist and songwriter, I wanted a space where creatives felt safe stepping outside their comfort zones, trying new things, and embracing their identity as entrepreneurs. The concept originally took root when I was working at a college career center, where I realized that preparing for a music career goes far beyond a traditional resume. Independent artists need real opportunities to perform and demonstrate their value directly in front of the industry decision-makers who inspire them.
Our offerings blend professional development, business strategy, and artist growth through custom workshops, lesson plans, and live event opportunities. We bridge the gap between creative passion and business ownership, proving that music and entrepreneurship go hand-in-hand. Above all, I want artists to leave our events equipped with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to walk into any room in the industry knowing without a doubt that they belong there.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I had a wild imagination. One of my fondest childhood memories was standing on the steps at home, singing random songs that popped into my head and pretending I was on tour. I wish I could remember those early lyrics today, but looking back, my imagination was already taking me to the exact place that would become my career.
I was a free spirit and bold—even if I hid a bit of shyness behind my smile. I was deeply drawn to aesthetics and art, loving everything involving beauty, fashion, makeup, and coloring. Beneath it all, I had a deep inner drive to be a creative, a changemaker, and a disruptor. Even as a little girl, I felt called to challenge norms through artistic expression, and I truly believe God was using those early years to set me up for the purpose I’m fulfilling today.
