Check Out Sushmitha Pidatala’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sushmitha Pidatala.

Hi Sushmitha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Arjuna started as a simple idea. I wanted to build something that went beyond selling home décor. I saw an opportunity to bring the beauty, craftsmanship, and nostalgia of South Asian design into the modern home in a way that felt fresh.

What began as an idea in my apartment has grown into a brand with a much bigger purpose, which is to celebrate my culture through thoughtful design and to create pieces that people actually want to connect with.

It hasn’t always been easy, and there has been a lot of learning along the way. But the heart of the brand has stayed the same: creating thoughtful pieces that feel personal, sparking a sense of nostalgia, and bringing a little bit of our culture into everyday life.

Seeing people connect with the brand and make these pieces part of their own homes has been the most rewarding part of the journey. Seeing how far we’ve come only makes me more excited about where we’re going next.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. I don’t think a perfectly smooth road ever leads to anything truly meaningful.

There were moments of uncertainty, moments when I questioned whether I was doing the right thing, and plenty of figuring it out on the fly. Building Arjuna while navigating life, family, and everything else that comes with it has required me to be in constant adapt mode.

But I also think those challenges have shaped the business. They forced me to become more resourceful, more patient, and clearer about why I started in the first place. Which is to create a space for South Asian design that is deeply distinctive while still gelling with the mainstream.

So no, it wasn’t a smooth road. But I wouldn’t change the road that brought me here.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Arjuna is much more than an e-commerce shop. It’s a creative platform built to bring artists, artisans, and customers together around a shared appreciation for South Asian-inspired design.

Our aim is to fuse creative perspectives from different cultures and walks of life, translating them into modern, practical home goods and accessories with a distinctive aesthetic. Each piece draws on the richness and timelessness of South Asian décor while reimagining it through a contemporary lens.

But ultimately, Arjuna is about more than the objects we sell. It’s about cultivating a community. One in which creators and consumers inspire one another, celebrate meticulous craftsmanship, and keep these artistic traditions alive in new and evolving forms. When someone brings an Arjuna piece into their home, we want them to feel they’re not simply buying something beautiful; they’re becoming part of that creative exchange.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I wish I had known just how much of a roller coaster the journey would be, and that the highs and lows are simply part of it. I also wish I had understood sooner that there is real value in building slowly and intentionally. Not everything needs to happen at once, and growth does not always need to come from a constant sense of hustle.

I’ve also learned that, for me, work and life are not two entirely separate worlds. They exist alongside one another and inevitably shape each other. Finding a way to embrace that, rather than constantly trying to draw a line between the two, has been important.

There will be disappointments, rejections, setbacks, and days when you question yourself entirely. I wish I had known that those moments are not aberrations from the journey. They are part of it. In many ways, they are what test your convictions, sharpen your perspective, and ultimately shape the kind of founder you become.
